    A family-run hardware store which has been trading in Reading for almost 90 years is set to close.

    Drews the Ironmongers says it is shutting its doors after Christmas because it can no longer compete against online shopping.

    Chairman David Drew said telling the store's 26 staff they were going to be made redundant was "the worst day in our family's life".

    Debenhams is understood to be seeking to close 50 of its 166 stores in a radical overhaul as it prepares to reveal a record £500m loss.

    The struggling department store chain has previously said 10 stores were earmarked for closure over the next five years but has raised that target.

    It is not known which stores will be affected but branches in the south include Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading, Oxford, Winchester, Weymouth, Thatcham, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Witney.

    Thames Valley Police, external officers were called to a layby in Oxford Road, Bicester, yesterday evening after reports that 19 people were in the back of a trailer.

    A police spokesman said a number of people had been taken to hospital for checks.

    Others who did not require hospital treatment were either handed over to social services or immigration officers for further investigation, he added.

    A not-so-sly fox had to be rescued by firefighters after getting its paws stuck in a picket fence.

    Animal rescue specialists were called to Hanlon Close, Bournemouth, shortly after 06:45 BST.

    The fire service said the creature appeared to have been "hanging around" overnight but was freed, unharmed, by 07:45.

    Three Tommy silhouettes have been put in place in Test Valley to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

    The council-funded silhouettes have been placed in Andover, Romsey and Stockbridge.

    The statues are part of the There But Not There nationwide campaign to represent those who lost their lives.

    Naree the chimpanzee, a victim of the illegal wildlife trade, has been safely rehomed at the UK rescue centre Monkey World.

    She was smuggled into Thailand and made to perform in a circus, pulling an orangutan and a tiger around the ring in a rickshaw.
