A detectorist has dug up a gold ring which could be 500 years old.

The seal ring, found by driving instructor Paul Wood from Upton, near Poole, was buried at Bampton in Oxfordshire.

Mr Wood said: "I’ve been metal detecting since the mid-1970s and this is a find of a lifetime for me... It’s in beautiful condition. There isn’t a blemish on it.”

The ring has been examined by the British Museum and will be auctioned later this month. It's expected to fetch up to £10,000.

The family of man who died when his car crashed into a fence post in Hampshire have paid tribute to him.

Alexander Fletcher, 40, died at the scene in Froyle Road, near Lower Froyle, last Friday morning.

His family said: "Alexander was a true gentleman with a voracious appetite for life.

"As a greatly respected consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, he touched the lives of so many patients, families and colleagues. He will be missed beyond measure."

Eastleigh College and Southampton City College have announced plans to merge in a move that will create the largest college of technical and professional education in south Hampshire, for 28,000 students annually.

The proposed merger follows the Department for Education's plans for restructuring , externalthe post-16 education and training sector.

Following consultation and review, the two colleges would look to merge in March next year, bringing together four campuses in Eastleigh, Winchester, Southampton and the Marine Skills Centre.

New Forest residents are being urged to only visit organised public fireworks displays, rather than setting off their own, while celebrating Bonfire Night.

The ponies and livestock which graze the open forest can easily be frightened by loud bangs and bright lights and may injure themselves running into fencing or across roads.

Tony Hockley, chairman of the Commoners Defence Association, said: "We'd also stress that flying lanterns can travel great distances, and are not safe to use. They pose a serious risk of fire to homes and can cause great harm if swallowed by animals."

Anyone planning a local firework display is urged to speak to neighbouring landowners to allow them to take precautions to safeguard their animals.

It really is a sorry sight here in Affpuddle in Dorset following the overnight fire which gutted a thatched cottage.

The roof of this idyllic cottage has entirely gone and the remains of the thatch lies on the road. The air is still filled with the thick stench of smoke.

At its height, more than 50 firefighters from across the county tackled the blaze and attempted to salvage property from the house - a TV and a chest of drawers are among the items sitting outside by the side of the road covered in frost.

Some staff at the South Western Ambulance Service have said they have been intimidated by sexual behaviour and viewing of pornography in the workplace.

An independent report found pockets of bullying and harassment within the service.

It follows a number of serious complaints about managers and other employees at the organisation.

Other staff connected bullying or inappropriate behaviour to suicides within the service, however the report found these links were "impossible" to prove.

Among 10 key recommendations, the report suggested the service "redouble efforts" to educate staff about discrimination on the grounds of disability, sexual orientation and gender.

Another suggestion was made to establish a "contract of respectful behaviour to enable managers to brief employees during induction, appraisals and team meetings".

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was attacked in Caversham.

The 50-year-old victim was hit several times on the head before she fled the attacker outside a home at 16:30 on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old, from Aldermaston, is currently in police custody.

There's concern for a missing man from Slough.

Ashok Kumar, 55, was last seen at a property in Carlisle Road at about 08:00 yesterday.

He is described as 5ft 4in, with a stocky build, and is balding with grey hair on the sides of his head.

There's concern for his safety as he has limited access to money, with no bank card or mobile phone.

Insp Chloe Robinson said: "We are growing concerned for Ashok’s welfare and would urge anyone who thinks they see him to contact police immediately."
