    Phil North, the leader of Test Valley Borough Council, has thanked the emergency services and those affected during the operation at Walworth Business Park.

    He said: "They have all done an outstanding job in an incredibly challenging situation. I'd also like to thank my hardworking council officers, some of whom worked extremely long hours to help keep our local community safe.

    "Importantly, I would also like to say how grateful I am to the local community for their unwavering spirit, patience and understanding throughout this incident.

    "Yet again, I find myself incredibly proud of all those who live and work in our town. Their astonishing resilience and support for one another is truly overwhelming.

    "Everyone has really rallied around to help each other."

    Ocado sent out its vans to help those evacuated during the major fire at its warehouse, the company has said.

    In its first statement since the fire service lifted the evacuation area, it said: "Ocado has been working closely with the emergency services and other organisations.

    "Ocado vans with food, drink, nappies and other essentials were sent to Andover and hotel rooms were made available for those who had to leave their homes during the night.

    "We would like to thank the large number of local businesses that came to the assistance of the community.

    "We apologise to all those affected by this incident and are very thankful to the people of Andover for their understanding and support during this difficult period.

    "We would like to once again thank the Hampshire Fire Service, the Hampshire Police and all the other emergency services and agencies for their hard work and professionalism in dealing with this incident.

    "As previously announced, there has been substantial damage to the Andover building and its contents.

    "Ocado is working hard to minimise disruption for customers by increasing capacity at other facilities.

    "Ocado is grateful for the patience and understanding of customers during this period."

    The fire service is expected to remain at the site for several days.

    The evacuation area around the Ocado fire site in Andover has been lifted.

    Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it is no longer considered to be a major incident and roads around the site are now open.

    Crews continue to work at the site, however.

    Group manager Nigel Cooper said: "We are pleased to have been able to safely remove the chemicals from the site throughout the night and into the early hours of this morning, meaning we can lift the evacuation zone.

    "It is thanks to the efforts of all our teams, on the ground and elsewhere, that we managed to contain the incident when it unexpectedly escalated late yesterday afternoon.

    "Our teams, and colleagues from Oxfordshire, Dorset & Wiltshire, Royal Berkshire and Hertfordshire have shown commitment and professionalism in dealing with a complex operation in incredibly challenging circumstances."

    Residents are now free to return home and businesses can operate as normal.

    Further to our update on coach firm Pikes, we've been informed they have managed to retrieve their buses and are running as usual, apart from the Picket Piece pick-up which is currently inaccessible.

    Picket Twenty or St Mary Bourne can be used as alternative pick up points, or other stops along the route.

  16. Ocado workers 'will still be paid'published at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2019

    Daniel Adams, the national officer of trade union Usdaw (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) says following discussions with Ocado, its employees will continue to be paid despite the ongoing fire.

    He said: "We have been talking to the company about the situation and the impact on employees at this incredibly uncertain time since yesterday.

    "Initially the message to some employees at the site appears to have included the use of holiday and unpaid leave.

    "Following discussions we are pleased that the company have now decided to pay employees for the hours they were rostered to work until further notice, regardless of previous communications.

    We will continue our dialogue with the company on the longer term implications and provide our members with the support, advice and representation they need at this difficult time."

    Almost 20 Hampshire families have spend the night in bed and breakfasts and temporary accommodation after being forced from their homes by the Ocado Warehouse fire, still burning 48 hours later in Andover.

    Firefighters evacuated a wider zone around the blaze amid fears of a toxic gas leak or explosion.

    Coach firm Pikes - which operates school runs - has said it may not be able to run its usual service as its premises are currently cordoned off by the emergency services.
