  1. Watch: Clearing brambles to help Worcestershire's rarest butterflypublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Volunteers have been up on the Malvern Hills today cutting back the brambles to make space for Worcestershire's rarest butterfly.

    The Grayling has been in decline for 10 years now, and Mel Mason from West Midlands Butterfly Conservation says he and his team are determined to turn the insects' fortunes around.

    A team from Herefordshire and Worcestershire have completed their challenge to drive across India in a tuk-tuk. 

    Dan Sharpe from Worcester and his two friends Ben Ingram and Olly Weaver were taking part in The Rickshaw Run. 

    The team called Tyrickshawrus Rex are raising money for Acorns Children's Hospice.

    - An inquest has heard that a gunman who shot and killed 38 tourists - including Worcester University student Joel Richards - on a beach in Tunisia in 2015, could have been stopped sooner

    - The Hereford and South Herefordshire Labour Party has called for the chairman of Wye Valley NHS Trust to be dismissed, citing a conflict of interests.

    - A memorial service has been held near to the South Pole in honour of the Herefordshire explorer Henry Worsley

  4. Apology for 'teething problems' at multimillion-pound poolpublished at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    The manager of Worcester's new swimming pool has apologised to swimmers in the city after the £10.5m facility at Perdiswell Leisure Centre had to close within a week of opening.  

    The pool closed on Saturday because of problems with the water supply, which then triggered further problems, but it reopened on Sunday. 

    Manager Lee Thomas has apologised for the inconvenience and says it was as frustrating for the the staff as it was for the users.

  5. 'Fitting' site for explorer memorialpublished at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Writing in his blog, Lou Rudd said his friend Henry Worsley would have appreciated the setting for the memorial service.

    "The views were incredible," he wrote, external.

    "We could see a big section of the Shackleton Glacier, and also the Zaneveld Glaciers, and then we had huge, sweeping panoramic views, right out across the Polar plateau, back towards the South Pole, and the surrounding Trans-Antarctic Mountains."

    Henry Worsley, from Herefordshire, was just 30 miles short of his goal when he developed a serious infection. he died in hospital in Punta Arenas, Chile, almost a year ago.

    The Spear 17 team have also left a "suitable tribute" to Mr Worsley, Mr Rudd said. More information is expected to be provided when the team return to the UK.

  7. Tunisian security forces 'deliberately delayed their arrival'published at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    An inquest hearing into the deaths of 30 British tourists in Tunisia in 2015 - including the University of Worcester student Joel Richards - has been told the nation's security forces deliberately delayed their arrival on the scene. 

    The court heard the claim came in a Tunisian judge's report into the circumstances surrounding the killing of the holidaymakers, who were among 38 people shot by an Islamist gunman at a beach near Sousse.

    Samantha Leek QC, counsel to the inquest, said the judge's investigation had been told security units  "had the ability to put an end to the attack before the police arrived but wasted a considerable amount of time in getting to the hotel".

    As the names of those who died were read out during today's proceedings, some of the relatives cried, held hands and bowed their heads.

  9. Call to float down the River Wyepublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A new festival is being organised on the River Wye in Herefordshire to raise money for charity.

    Some 15,000 people have expressed interest on social media in taking part in Wye Float, external this August which will see them float down a set route in various kinds of inflatables, dinghies, swimming pools, or self-built rafts.

    Organiser Samantha Pulling from Hereford says the idea was inspired by a similar festival in Finland.

  10. Third inmate charged after prison riotpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A prisoner being held at Worcestershire's HMP Hewell has become the third inmate to be charged in connection with the outbreak of disorder at HMP Birmingham. 

    Carl Brookes will appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court tomorrow accused of two offences of prison mutiny and one of taking a photograph inside the prison.

    The incident saw four wings of the prison taken over by prisoners, who set fires and threw missiles at staff in a 12-hour riot which caused damage estimated at £2m. 

    Brookes was transferred to Hewell following the outbreak a month ago.  

  11. Travel: Animals on line cause travel chaospublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Trains are being disrupted between Hereford and Colwall because of animals on the line, external

    London Midland says services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes, or revised and the disruption could last until 16:00.

    Passengers have been told their tickets will be valid for alternative routes until further notice.

    A man on a mobility scooter was taken to hospital with minor injuries, external after he collided with another vehicle while crossing the road in Hereford. 

    It happened at around 10:00 on New Year's Day on Hoarwithy Road at the intersection with Holme Lacy Road. 

    The man who's in his 50s suffered a medical episode at the time of the collision and is unable to remember exactly what happened.

    The police are hoping the driver of the vehicle will come forward and as the area was busy at the time, they're also hoping to speak to people who saw the crash.

  13. South pole memorial service for explorer Henry Worsleypublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A memorial service has been held near to the south pole in honour of the Herefordshire explorer Henry Worsley. 

    The adventurer died almost a year ago whilst trying to become the first man to cross the Antartic solo, unaided and unsupported.

    His friend Lou Rudd from Hereford is now leading a team following Henry's route and says it was important to them to pay tribute.

  14. Flat fire: Police suspect arsonpublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    West Mercia Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on a flat in Redditch, external over the weekend. 

    Firefighters were called to an empty flat in High Trees Close at around 17:30 on Saturday and they were quickly able to contain the fire. 

    Officers say they're keeping an open mind as to the cause of the fire, but it's believed someone may have deliberately set fire to the contents of a bin store near the front door of the property.

    The Redditch MP Karen Lumley has had a health relapse and will be away from Westminster for the rest of the month. 

    Mrs Lumley had an operation last October and has only recently returned to work. 

    Her office said anyone with constituency matters could contact her in the usual way, but that she was likely to be away from parliament until at least the end of January.
