    Plans for Worcester to have its own lottery, with a top prize of £25,000, have been backed.

    The new weekly lottery, which will cost £1 to play, has been unanimously approved by the council in principle and could be launched later this year.

    The council says 60p from the cost of each ticket will go towards supporting charities and other causes in the city, with the rest going on admin costs and the prize fund.

    A preferred route has been chosen for Hereford's new £129m Western bypass.

    The red route was chosen from a colour-coded shortlist of seven. Five homes will have to be demolished to make way for it.

    Herefordshire Council says the bypass will divert traffic out of the city and open up land for new homes and businesses to be built.

    Opponents say it won't alleviate traffic and will destroy valuable farmland, the county's wildlife and the River Wye corridor.

    The number of car-parking spaces being offered at Worcestershire's new railway station could be doubled or even trebled, if there's overwhelming demand for them.

    Worcestershire Parkway, near Norton, will initially accommodate 500 spaces, but Worcestershire councillor Ken Pollock said it should be easy to add a second deck if necessary.

    The authority says building work should be complete early in 2019 and that the first trains could be stopping there by the time the May timetables are published.

    The Severn Valley Railway has stopped running steam locomotives to reduce the risk of starting fires.

    It took the precaution after the fire service was called out on Sunday to attend a number of small blazes which broke out along the line.

    They set their hosts 507 to win at Eastnor, and bowled them out for 378, with Alex Wyatt taking 4-61 and Gurjit Sandhu 3-62.

    Barney Morgan was unbeaten on 147 for Herefordshire.

    A Malvern man has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of an 11-year-old boy in the town.

    Alexander James Johnson, who is 47 and from West Malvern Road, was arrested after the boy was found injured on 2 May.

    He appeared before Worcester Crown Court this morning and a trial is due to start on 15 October.

    A Worcester cricket coach who has been fighting deportation to Sri Lanka is flying home today, after losing his appeal to the Home Office.

    Hemaka Pathiranage came to the UK from Sri Lanka to study in 2011, but his student visa has expired and he can't get a job with sufficient salary to enable him to stay.

    Almost three-and-a-half thousand people signed a petition to try and keep him in the UK, but he lost an appeal to stay on human rights grounds.

    The interim headteacher of a school placed into special measures has written to parents saying the school "faces a significant challenge".

    Lee Gray, of North Bromsgrove High School in Worcestershire, acknowledged the school needed to make rapid improvements to reverse Ofsteds judgements.

    Mr Gray has invited all parents and carers to a meeting with himself and the governors where he will discuss the next steps to be taken.

    A recent Ofsted inspection rated North Bromsgrove High School inadequate saying standards have been too low over time, pupils behaviour is not good enough and leadership is not cohesive.

    The school's leaders and governors lack the capacity to bring about the necessary improvements, inspectors added.

    Headteacher Angelina Robin-Jones left the school last month, citing "personal reasons".

    In a letter to parents the school's interim headteacher, Lee Gray, said the school now faces a "significant challenge".
