    The University of Hull, external is offering people a chance to make DNA strands from sweets in their tent in Hull's Queens Gardens.

    Hull's Maritime Museum is looking at the world of pirates and privateers.

    Billed as a family-friendly exhibition which explores the city's links with piracy, it features a costume worn by Johnny Depp in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as a number of the Aardman Animation models from the movie The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. 

    The Maritime Museum is open until 17:00.

    Among the fun and celebrations, a minute's silence was held , externalin a show of support for those affected by the ongoing migrant crisis on the European mainland.

    Organiser Richard Wilson told BBC Look North he thought it was an important thing to do.

    "I went on social media and I started this to gather people together who equally feel frustrated and want to do something," he said.

  11. Slimy science in city parkpublished at 15:19

    Two scientists from the University of Hull will battle to win over the audience with a series of demonstrations, to avoid being gunged.

    Dr Mark Lorch and Phil Bell-Young will be demonstrating the science behind slime at the bandstand in Queen’s Gardens throughout the afternoon until 18:00..

    The audience will vote on the best presentation, with the loser getting covered in slime.

  12. Freedom Festival: What a tangled web we weavepublished at 15:02

    'Tangle' allows children and adults to produce a giant artwork by weaving together  balls of coloured elastic.

    The play space in Queens Gardens will be transformed into a giant web to the accompaniment of live music.

    It started at 12:00 and there are sessions throughout the day.

    There's minor disruption westbound on the A63 at Mytongate in Hull city centre as crowds cross the road to get to the Freedom Festival events in Hull Marina.

    Also reports of some delays on the A1079 Sutton Road in Hull due to roadworks.

    Stagecoach, external is providing an extended Park and Ride service for visitors to the Freedom Festival this year.

    Buses will run every 15 minutes to and from Priory Park in west Hull, with the last bus back from the city centre leaving at 00:28.

  17. Hull's Freedom Festival celebrates its eighth yearpublished at 14:03

    The annual arts festival was established in 2007 as part of commemorations to mark the 200th anniversary of Hull MP William Wilberforce's change in the law to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire.

    It takes place over three days in venues and parks across Hull city centre.

    More than 80,000 people attended the event last year and organisers hope to top that figure this year.
