    Tony Hall

Lots of people have spoken about how being City of Culture will "put Hull on the map".

BBC director general Tony Hall means it. He says the biggest complaint he gets in Hull is about the city not appearing on TV weather maps.

"I've just made a call and as of Jan 1 Hull will be there on every weather map, national and local." That got the biggest cheer of the day.

  7. Hull 2017: So, isn't it all a bit of waste of money? I don't think so.published at 15:55 British Summer Time 22 September 2016

    Will Gompertz
    BBC Arts Editor

So, isn't it all a bit of a waste of money?

I don't think so. I accept the arts festival on its own won't change much. But its very existence might. It has the potential to transform the city.

The real point of having a City of Culture, an idea that started as a pan-European initiative, is not the fun stuff per se, but to use the festivities as a catalyst for change.

It's simple human psychology - if you're inviting people you want to impress around to your house for dinner, the chances are you'll have a bit of a tidy up.

Being bestowed with the title of UK City of Culture has already changed Hull. I've seen it with my own eyes.

The old dry dock has been turned into an amphitheatre, while old cracked paving stones are being replaced by smart granite setts. Right now the place is a building site. I kept expecting to bump into Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs, sucking his teeth and shaking his head at the last-minuteness of it all.

It's noisy, messy and impressive. Hull is not going about being UK City of Culture in a half-hearted way. It is really going for it.

  8. Hull 2017: BBC to stage four-day spoken word and poetry festivalpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 22 September 2016

    Louise Wheeler
    BBC Local Live

A major new national spoken word festival, a ballet for young children made in Hull and the recruitment of a hundred local community reporters are just some of the projects the BBC will host as part of UK City of Culture.

The spoken world festival will be called Contains Strong Language.

It'll be a four day festival and will open on National Poetry Day on September 28.

I want the BBC to be unashamedly Hull-centric in 2017. The plans we've revealed today show we are living up to that commitment.

  9. Hull 2017: Travel writer impressed by Hull's energypublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 22 September 2016

    Stuart Harratt
    BBC Local Live

Simon Calder, travel editor for the Independent newspaper, said he was very impressed “just seeing the energy that is going into the city”.

However, he sounded a note of caution about the prospects of Hull benefitting from a tourism boom during the City of Culture due to its “geography”.

“The trouble is for Hull just that extra distance from the main north south corridors is always going to be bit of an ask,” he said.

“There’s quite a lot in terms of image that people have to contend with if they are going genuinely to benefit from the City of Culture year in terms of creating an image, a  tourism industry as it were for Hull rather than being somewhere people go to on the way to or from the ferry.”

“They don’t necessarily come here because it is a great and fascinating place that has no parallel elsewhere in the UK.

Dozens of journalists and movers and shakers from the arts are filing in to Hull Truck for the line-up announcement and there's a real sense of excitement.

Outgoing Tate boss Sir Nicholas Serota and Hull 2017 chair Rosie Millard have just given the great and good (and me) a short intro.

Not sure the excitement has yet spread throughout the whole city quite yet though. Walking here, I passed one man who saw a poster, said "City of Culture?" then let out a loud, incredulous laugh.
