  7. Not all breakaway attempts are futilepublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

That's it from me for the day. Thanks for all your company. There will be a race report up very soon.

I did say a little earlier today that not all breakaway attempts are futile and today was one of those. Keep an eye on Harry Tanfield, that young man could well go places after a ride like that.

There will be a bit more reaction and pictures in this page...and I'll be back for stage two tomorrow.

  8. And the winner is...published at 18:17 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Wow, great photo.

Harry Tanfield takes stage one of the TdY2018.

  9. Cavendish in the pelotonpublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

The five in the break all made it over the line five seconds ahead of the peloton.

Perfect tactics by Harry Tanfield who played a dangerous game by missing his turns on the front in the run-in and faked that he was out of gas before timing his sprint to perfection.

Bryan Coquard cut a disconsolate figure as he freewheeled over the line in seventh. No sign of Mark Cavendish, who will have finished in the peloton. Stage three is expected to be a bunch sprint finish - perhaps that will be his day.

  10. Extraordinary scenes in Doncasterpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

What a race. That was sensational! Harry Tanfield, the 23-year-old Yorkshireman who rides for Canyon Eisberg is all smiles as he crosses the line, hands in the air. The peloton was baring down on the break but they left it too late.

  11. Tanfield wins!published at 18:07 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

Harry Tanfield win stage one of Tour de Yorkshire!

  12. Final kilopublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

Britain's Tom Pidcock is having a go on the front of the peloton!

But here come the big boys. Have they left this too late? They enter the final kilometre with an advantage of 24 seconds. Is that enough? We're about to find out...

  13. 3km remaining and break staying clearpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

Five Dimension Data riders are up near the front of the peloton. Mark Cavendish is one of them. But they are not going fast enough to bring this back.

    Vital Concept have disappeared again.

Is Harry Tanfield playing games? He misses his turn on the front of the break - is he feigning that's he's out of juice, or is he saving himself for the finish.

Inside the final 3km and the lead is still 35 seconds.

  14. Break still clear - 5km remainingpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

As much as I love seeing Mark Cavendish win, I think I'd love to see the break hold on...

The quintet are in sight though as they sweep round a roundabout and briefly slip out of view again. Their big issue coming up is that they can't afford to play cat and mouse if they reach the final kilometre in front, which means somebody is going to run out of energy pulling the others along.

Here comes Vital Concept. Bryan Coquard has clearly had a word. Dimension Data also visible at the front.

5km to go and 35 seconds lead.

  15. 7.5km remainingpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

The lead drops under a minute - another 10 seconds gone in the last kilometre. Ian Stannard is grimacing on the front of the peloton. He needs help and quickly to bring this back.

The five in the break are holding firm here and they all deserve another mention: Mike Cuming, Ali Slater, Tom Baylis, Emerson Oronte and Harry Tanfield. Chapeau to all of you.

You have 7.5km to hang on with a 49-second advantage.

  16. Is the break going to stay clear?published at 17:55 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

Time to get serious in the peloton. The Dimension Data boys have had enough of this break and they have put two men on the nose of the peloton, two more are working their way up and the seconds are starting to go...but too slowly.

Team Sky are putting two men on the front as well. Bryan Coquard is playing a canny game though and is not committing any of his Vital Concept riders to this chase.

Harry Tanfield has a determined look on his face in the break. He's not giving this up and his fellow escapees are working hard with him.

The lead is 70 seconds with 10km remaining...

  17. Can you see 'em yet?published at 17:54 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

The finish line is already seeing a bit of neck stretching going on in Doncaster.

    Finish line crowd

Cameras ready, hoping for great shots of the sprint finish to the first stage of this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

  18. When six become fivepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport

Our leading sextet is now a quintet. French rider Axel Journiaux is the first to crack and the Direct Energie man will have a long, lonely pedal to Doncaster - the peloton will rush past him in no time at all and he will be spat out the back.

Ian Stannard is putting in a good turn on the front of the peloton and the lead is down to 90 seconds as we enter the final 15km.

  19. 20km remainingpublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

There are four riders from four different teams rotating at the front of the peloton and sharing the chase duties as we enter the final 20km.

A rider from Mark Cavendish's Dimension Data team is among them as is a Vital Concept rider for Bryan Coquard.

The lead is 110 seconds and coming down with each pedal revolution.
