Simon Weller, the Assistant General Secretary of Aslef, has described the relationship between Southern and its staff as "utterly toxic".
He says if the two sides can't resolve the dispute the union could take more strike action.
Firearms officers shot a dog dead after it attacked a child, causing life threatening injuries.
Kent Police was called at 17:26 BST to the incident in the Jenkins Dale area of Chatham.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Service also attended and the injured child has been taken to a London hospital in a critical condition.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident and they have been taken into custody while enquiries into the incident continue.
Members of the public who may have footage of the incident are asked to contact Kent Police on 101 and not upload it onto social media.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service is being forced to remove equipment from some of its ambulances, and limit the number of people who can travel in them.
It's because the vehicles are getting too heavy to be safe on the road.
Forty five out of a fleet of 300 will only be allowed to transport a maximum of two crew members and a patient and 18 of those ambulances have had kit removed.

Customs officers are hunting for a lorry driver who is on the run after being caught smuggling more than 5.7m cigarettes into the UK through Dover.
Richard Curtis, who's 57, from South Yorkshire, failed to attend his trial at Maidstone Crown Court and was found guilty of evading more than £1.3m in excise duty.
His HGV was stopped at the Port in November 2013 and found to contain 5,729,900 cigarettes hidden beneath boxes of frozen chips.
Two "barbaric" men were each been given life sentences for beating a couple and dousing them with boiling water during a burglary at their home.
John and Janis Buswell were tied up with cable ties and tortured during a two-hour ordeal in Halstead, Kent.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard they were also threatened with a knife and a hot iron last April.
