A man sparked an alert in Eastbourne after he drove to a police office with a hand grenade in his van's glove compartment.

Buildings were evacuated in Eastbourne and part of the town cordoned off after he went into the police office in Grove Road on Thursday afternoon and told officers the grenade was in his van parked outside.

Sussex Police said he had found what appeared to be a World War Two device during a property clearance in Hailsham.

Bomb disposal teams are on their way but police said the cordon could be lifted and people allowed back into buildings after they were sent photographs.

She said the van had been secured where it was parked and was under police control.
