Four healthcare professionals have been arrested on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious substance to patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

One man and three women have been held amid allegations of mistreatment and neglect at the hospital.

Police are investigating after concerns were raised about the care provided to some patients on the stroke unit.

Two women and a man previously arrested as part of the inquiry were released under investigation.

The investigation of alleged poisoning of patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital last November remains a "complex and sensitive inquiry", police have said.

Three women and one man have been arrested on suspicion of administering any poison or noxious thing with the intent to injure and ill treatment or wilful neglect this morning, bringing the number of staff members held over the allegations to seven.

Dept Ch Insp Jill Johnston said the investigation was "very much ongoing", adding:

Lancashire Police said the force is working closely with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and HM Coroner for Blackpool and Fylde as part of the investigation.

The arrests relate to the alleged mistreatment and neglect of patients on the hospital's stroke unit last November.

Two women and one man were arrested in November and December and later released under investigation.

Earlier, a further three women and one man were arrested on suspicion of administering any poison or noxious thing with the intent to injure and ill treatment or wilful neglect.

They are currently in custody.

There are major delays on Greater Manchester's roads this morning after a lorry fire on the M60.

There has been six miles of congestion on the approach from the M60 clockwise and an eight-mile queue on the eastbound approach from the M62.

Highways England said the delays will add about up to an hour on to journey times.

The vehicle caught fire near to Junction 12 and is currently being recovered.

One lane remains closed on the M60 but knock-on delays are continuing and police have asked people to consider using alternative routes.

The blaze broke out just after 05:00 at the former Church of St John the Evangelist on Victoria Street, which was built in the 18th century.

Surrounding roads were closed.
