    Police are investigating after concerns were raised about the care provided to some patients on the stroke unit.

    Two women and a man previously arrested as part of the inquiry were released under investigation.

    Three women and one man have been arrested on suspicion of administering any poison or noxious thing with the intent to injure and ill treatment or wilful neglect this morning, bringing the number of staff members held over the allegations to seven.

    The arrests relate to the alleged mistreatment and neglect of patients on the hospital's stroke unit last November.

    Two women and one man were arrested in November and December and later released under investigation.

    Earlier, a further three women and one man were arrested on suspicion of administering any poison or noxious thing with the intent to injure and ill treatment or wilful neglect.

    They are currently in custody.

    There has been six miles of congestion on the approach from the M60 clockwise and an eight-mile queue on the eastbound approach from the M62.

    Highways England said the delays will add about up to an hour on to journey times.

    The vehicle caught fire near to Junction 12 and is currently being recovered.

    One lane remains closed on the M60 but knock-on delays are continuing and police have asked people to consider using alternative routes.

    A teenager has been stabbed and seriously injured in a street attack in Salford.

    The 17-year-old boy was attacked shortly before 14:45 in Tatton Street, Ordsall.

    Greater Manchester Police said he had been taken to hospital with serious injuries though they are not thought to be life-threatening.

    The force said a cordon was in place at the crime scene and an investigation had been launched but no arrests had been made.

    Fire crews remain at the scene of the blaze which started just before 05.30 at The Bureau Centre for the Arts, although the flames have now been extinguished.

    A freak downpour of hail and snow caused a pile-up involving 24 vehicles in Lancashire last night.

    Officers described the scene on the M55 as "carnage".

    Nobody was seriously injured but traffic police closed the M6 between junctions one and three due to the severely icy conditions.

    The stretch of motorway between Preston and Kirkham later reopened.

    Up to 60 firefighters have been tackling a large fire at an historic former church in Blackburn which is now used as an arts centre.

    The blaze broke out just after 05:00 at the former Church of St John the Evangelist on Victoria Street, which was built in the 18th century.

    Surrounding roads were closed.

    Dean of Blackburn Cathedral Peter Howell-Jones said it was "very sad to see the building on fire".
