  3. Autumn Statement: 'Not the time for police cuts'published at 14:25

    West Yorkshire Police, who were bracing themselves for deep cuts, will be relieved to hear that the Chancellor has announced there will be no further reductions in police budgets.

    In an unexpected move, George Osborne, who had been expected to announce cuts of up to 10%, says there'll be "no cuts" to police budgets.

    "There will be real-terms protection for police funding," the Chancellor adds as he continues to deliver his Autumn Statement in the commons.

    Transpennine rail electrification is on track and transport investment will see work start on the HS2 high-speed rail link to Leeds, the Chancellor has announced.

    It's part of a package of measures that will see spending on transport infrastructure projects increase by 50% to £61bn.

    Sunny spells will remain this afternoon, although they're set to become increasingly confined to eastern parts as a weather front introduces cloudier conditions across the west.

    Vikki Thompson, 21, died at Armley jail on 13 November. She had previously told her friends she would kill herself if she was sent to a male prison.

    Vikki was considered at risk of self-harm and was being checked every hour by prison staff, an inquest's heard today.

    He claims the north of England has grown faster than the south of the country since 2010. 

    Now, councils in the north will be watching closely to see how that translates into actual financial investment.

  10. Transgender prison death: Inquest adjourned for jury hearingpublished at 11:24

    The inquest into the death of a transgender woman in a men's prison in Leeds, has been adjourned while police and the Prison Service carry out investigations. 

    Vikki Thompson, 21, died at Armley Jail on 13 November. She had previously told her friends she would kill herself if she was sent to a male prison.

    The full inquest will be heard by a jury at a later date.

  11. Transgender prison death: Prison staff found woman's bodypublished at 11:07

    A transgender woman who died while in custody in a men's prison in Leeds was checked about an hour before she was found dead, an inquest into her death has heard.

    Vikki Thompson, 21, died at Armley jail on 13 November. She was checked and seen by staff at about 19:00, giving no cause for concern.

    She was then checked again at about 20:10, but this time she could not be seen and prison staff entered her cell. She was pronounced dead a short time later, the inquest has been told.

  13. Transgender prison death: Vikki Thompson 'considered at risk of self-harm'published at 10:17

    A transgender woman who died while in custody in a men's prison in Leeds was considered to be at risk of self-harm and was being checked every hour by prison staff, an inquest has been told.

    Vikki Thompson, 21, died at Armley jail on 13 November. She had previously told her friends she would kill herself if she was sent to a male prison.

    A post-mortem examination was carried out on 16 November and the cause of Ms Thompson's death is thought to be hanging, although investigations are continuing, the inquest has heard.

  14. Two men in hospital after Huddersfield house firepublished at 09:55

    Two men are being treated in hospital after a house fire in Huddersfield in the early hours of this morning.

    The fire started in the front room of the property, external on Church Street in Longwood at about 02:00 and was tackled by firefighters from Huddersfield and Rastrick.

    The two men were initially treated by paramedics at the scene after suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.
