  4. Analysis: What Leeds Trolleybus scheme rejection means for citypublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 12 May 2016

    Spencer Stokes
    Journalist, BBC Look North

As we've been hearing, the government has thrown out a multimillion-pound trolleybus scheme for Leeds.

The city has spent £60m developing the idea following the rejection of Supertram in 2005

The government's refusal to give consent means Leeds is the biggest city in Europe without, and without plans for, a rapid transport scheme.

The £170m earmarked for the trolleybus plans can be retained by Leeds for the development of a future transport scheme.

The statement, by a DfT spokesperson, adds: "We are disappointed the local authorities cannot proceed with the Trolleybus but £173m of DfT funding will be retained so the right public transport scheme in Leeds can be developed as quickly as possible.

"We will now fully support Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority on those next steps as the government continues to invest in Yorkshire and helps deliver the Northern Powerhouse."

  9. Background: Red light for Leeds Trolleybus schemepublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 12 May 2016

More on the news that the government has refused consent for the Leeds Trolleybus system.

If the Leeds New Generation Transport trolleybus system (NGT) had been approved, it would have have seen a nine-mile route built from the city centre to the north and south of the city.

The NGT would have seen buses powered by overhead cables travelling along a largely segregated roadway passing the city's universities, the First Direct Arena, Leeds General Infirmary Trinity Leeds, Brewery Wharf and New Dock.

The plan was supported by the The West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Council, but the North West Leeds Transport Forum claimed the project was "fundamentally flawed".
