  3. Armed robber jailed for six years over gem raidspublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2017

    An armed robber who raided a jewellers in Halifax has been jailed for six years and nine months. Scott Lister (pictured) pointed what looked like a handgun in the faces of two of the staff.

    Lister hadn't been taking his anti-psychotic medication when he and another man raided Kingston Jewellers in Halifax last June, smashing cabinets and grabbing stock worth nearly £4,000. 

    Two days he was part of a gang that ram-raided Neimantas Jewellers in Brighouse, this time taking stock valued at £24,000.

  6. Child sex abuser jailed for 27 yearspublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2017

    A sex offender has been jailed for 27 years at Sheffield Crown Court after being convicted of 13 sex offences against six victims aged between five and 19-years-old.

    Shaun Connealy, 61, of Blackfriars Road, Great Yarmouth, committed the offences between 1977 and 1994 in Sheffield, Rotherham and Skegness.

    Detective Constable Rachael Ellis said Connealy denied all the offences forcing the victims to testify.

    People in Penistone and Stocksbridge, an area with higher levels of fuel poverty, are getting advice on cheaper ways to heat their homes.

    According to government statistics one in 10 households in the area are experiencing fuel poverty, with some people facing a choice between heating and eating. 

    A Facebook page, external, created as part of a national project called Fuelling Connections, external, is providing advice and support.

  9. Thousands travel on Settle to Carlisle steam trainpublished at 16:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2017

    More than 5,500 people got on board the special steam-pulled Settle to Carlisle line this week, it was the first timetabled steam service in more than 50 years.

    The carriages were pulled along by the locomotive "Tornado" and the service was used to promote information he line had reopened after a year after a land slip.

    Tornado, the first mainline steam engine to be built in the UK since the 1960s, pulled an eight-carriage train between Appleby, Cumbria, and Skipton, North Yorkshire. 

    It was the first time since 1968 that a steam locomotive has hauled a passenger train on a scheduled main line service.

  11. Sheffield noise row killers jailed for lifepublished at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2017

    A couple who stabbed, kicked and punched a man to death in Sheffield in a row about noise have been jailed for life.

    David Webster, 49, from Hillsborough and Alison Moss, 46, from Walkley inflicted 117 separate injuries on Craig Wild during a ferocious attack at Moss's home on Fox Walk in January last year. 

    Mr Wild, 47, was murdered after he went to speak with the pair after they threatened to kill a neighbour who they wrongly believed had complained about noise coming from their home.

    Mr Wild was attacked with a craft knife, razor and screwdriver. 

    Webster and Moss were told they must serve a minimum of 24 years and two months and 29 years behind bars respectively.

    There are going to be big, big celebrations in Tadcaster this weekend.

    Events are planned for Sunday to mark the reopening of the town's bridge including a blessing of the bridge from the Archbishop of York. 

    It's a couple of weeks now since the bridge reopened - I'm sure you saw some of the pics - amazing scenes of hundreds of people crossing for the first time since it collapsed in the floods in December 2015,

    Leading organisations in Sheffield have launched their vision for the future, external of the city region.

    Sheffield's Universities and NHS teaching hospitals say there needs to be a massive investment in and focus on education and skills and tackling inequality. 

    The plan includes areas outside South Yorkshire, such as Worksop, Bolsover, Chesterfield and Matlock.

    Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said there is a lot to be proud of locally:

    A novice driver has been cleared of causing death by careless driving after an accident in Darnall in Sheffield in January 2015 when an off-duty police officer was killed. 

    Waqas Khan, 23, from Darnall told Sheffield Crown Court he had never driven in snow and "was being more cautious", reducing his speed to 20mph in a 30mph area when he suddenly saw PC Hassan Ali in front of him..
