Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly due to confirm the delay at a news conference at 18:00 amid concerns over rising infection levels being driven by the Delta variant.

The variant arrived in North Yorkshire last month and Harrogate’s weekly infection rate has since more than tripled, although there were no Covid patients in the district hospital as of last Wednesday and it's been two months since it recorded a death.

Public Health England figures show the latest infection rate for the Harrogate district is 52 cases per 100,000 people – up from 16 this time last month.

The latest figure is also above the North Yorkshire average of 41, but below the England average of 70.

A man was assaulted from behind by a group of youths who knocked him to the floor, and then kicked him in his face and chest, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Officers say the incident took place on Station Road, Upper Poppleton, shortly before 22:00 on Friday 28 May.

It is thought the attackers might be from a local school, and may have been celebrating their last day in school.

A spokesperson for the North Yorkshire force said: "Three of the suspects are described as follows:

"Male one was white, skinny build, around 15 to 16-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall, wearing a reddish/blackish baseball cap, a white short-sleeved t-shirt and black trackies.

It comes as government sources say most current coronavirus rules will remain in place for another four weeks after the planned 21 June unlocking.

Senior ministers have signed off on the decision to delay the lifting of all legal restrictions on social contact.

Prof Mark Harris, of the University of Leeds, said: "I don't think we should be considering relaxing all of our restrictions at this critical stage in our response to the pandemic.

"My worry is that if we take all of the controls off we'll see a massive increase in the number of cases."

The prime minister is expected to confirm today that the final easing of lockdown rules be postponed beyond 21 June.

The aim of the scheme is to secure a "prosperous working harbour, champion fishing heritage and create a must visit destination for hospitality, leisure and events," the council claims.

Councillor Janet Jefferson said: "The harbour and pier area play a critical role in Scarborough’s local economy, with strong links to the fishing and hospitality industries.

"We want to develop a scheme which supports and helps these industries to grow, while at the same time creating a destination that becomes the focal point for leisure activity and events within South Bay."

Plans include new pier entrance kiosks, refurbishment of the listed building on the pier to include improved artists’ studios, refurbishment of the harbour offices and fish market buildings and an improved and larger cafe or restaurant space.

The cost of the Scarborough Harbour West Pier regeneration scheme is being met by £5m from the government’s Towns Fund while the council is contributing £1.5m.

It's hoped work on the scheme will start in autumn next year and be completed in the summer of 2024.
