These are now thought to be extinct (perhaps because people hunted them and had them stuffed) but you can still see one at the Leeds Discovery Centre in Hunslet. 

This one dates from 1869 and is one of only 80 in the world, but there still might be some left in the wild after it was thought they were wiped out in 1936.

There have been plenty of unconfirmed sightings of the Tasmanian Wolf, but still no hard evidence they're still kicking about somewhere in Australia. 

Two men were left with serious injuries after they were attacked by a group of men and women in York.

It happened on Bank Holiday Monday in the Castlegate area after an argument.

Both men were found unconscious with serious injuries, with one of them having to spend two nights in hospital.

People who saw what happened are being urged to call the police on 101.

Seven-year-old Joe McCafferty was sleeping soundly at his aunt's home in Huddersfield on 3 May 1997 when someone poured petrol through the letterbox and torched the house.

Exactly 20 years on, his family still live with the terrors of that night but remain determined to find his killer.  

Joe was staying with his cousins at the house in Haywood Avenue in Marsh when the arsonist struck on 3 May 1997.

All five members of the family escaped or were rescued, but Joe never pulled through.

And although arrests have been made, no-one has ever been charged over the attack, which has left all of those affected struggling to make sense of it.

Wakefield Trinity winger Tom Johnstone will miss the rest of the season after scans confirmed he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 30-10 win against Catalans Dragons.

Johnstone, 21, has been ruled out for up to eight months, a lay-off that has also ended any hopes of him making the England squad for the World Cup.

He will undergo surgery once the knee has settled from the initial damage.

"I'm trying to be positive about it," Johnstone has told the club website, external.

A judge has reserved a decision on whether a new visitor centre at York's landmark Clifford's Tower can go ahead.

Campaigners are fighting against Historic England's plans to build the centre and a cafe at the site which dates back to the 13th century.

They say it resembles a "toilet block" and would "spoil the site".

English Heritage was granted permission to build the £2m visitor centre last October. 

They said the project would enhance access to the site and work was due to begin in November.

A judgement is expected in the next couple of weeks.  

An appeal is being made for relatives of a man from Halifax who died yesterday to come forward.

Russell Thompson, of Elm View, died on Tuesday from natural causes, aged 61.　

It is believed Mr Thompson may have a brother and father also living in the area.　

Coroners are appealing for information to help trace them.  

A sheep from Todmorden has a lot to be thankful for after being pulled to safety when she got stuck in between some rocks on moorland yesterday.

Dolly, who weighs in at 50kg, was spotted by some walkers who raised the alarm last night. 

Ten firefighters came out to her rescue.

The officers used specialist rope gear to winch themselves down and pull her out.

The father of a child who died after being hit by a car in Leeds at the weekend had only just returned from a month-long trip abroad the day before, his family has revealed.

Four-year-old Yusuf Jatta died after being hit by a Vauxhall Corsa at the junction of Chapeltown Road and Reginald Terrace on Saturday afternoon. 

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting the police investigation.    

In a statement, Yusuf's family say his dad "had just returned from a month in Gambia and spent a day with him before this tragic accident".

Yusuf attended nursery at Hillcrest Academy and "was loved by his teachers", they add.

A new £20m "global centre of excellence" for the glass industry is coming to Rotherham.

The Glass Futures project will be based at Rotherham's Magna Science Adventure Centre and is backed by two major manufacturers as well as Siemens and Leeds University.

It aims to bring together experts from across the world to carry out research into energy and emissions reduction, glass formulation and new high-tech products. 

The furnace for the new project will be housed in a large, previously unused area at Magna known as the Dark Space, with the intention of integrating it into the existing visitor attraction.   

Work is expected to start later this year and will employ about 100 people.

Investigations into a fire at the University of York on Tuesday are continuing today.

Five fire engines were called to Wentworth College at lunchtime yesterday.

Nobody was hurt in the incident and it's believed it was started deliberately.

Former left-arm medium-pacer Mike Bore, who had a long career at Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, dies aged 69.

So what do you do if you've got one and you've no plans to spend it between now and then? 

Here are your options:

• All notes keep their face value for all time, but you just can't use them in shops when they stop being legal tender
• Get along to a bank, building society or post office and get them to give you a plastic one
• If they won't change it, you'll have to send it off to the Bank of England on Threadneedle Street in London - or you could always take it along there yourself...

I actually quite like the idea of that last option. I wonder if they take you into the back of the bank to a massive skip of them and just chuck it in?

An ambitious programme of events is being organised to mark the 50th year of Leeds Carnival.

No day is ordinary for firefighters in South Yorkshire, it seems.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue team in Rotherham spent part of the morning freeing this little kitten who'd snuck into the front of a parked car.

Fortunately, no harm was done - though it might be a case of eight lives remaining...

A 47-year-old man suffered serious injuries after the car he was travelling in overturned between Doncaster and Rotherham.

The crash happened at about 19:00 on Bank Holiday Monday on the A630 Doncaster Road in Hooton Roberts, about half-a-mile before the junction with Holmes Lane.

The blue Vauxhall Corsa, in which the man was travelling as a passenger, left the road, turning over and coming to rest on its roof. 

The 39-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries.

Wakefield Council has spent more than £2.5m buying back 35 homes it sold for about £981,000 under right-to-buy laws introduced to meet housing shortages, it's emerged.

The right-to-buy policy was introduced by the Conservatives in the 1980s, allowing council house tenants to buy their homes at a discount.

BBC News looked at local authority areas where waiting lists rose for four consecutive years since 2011 and chose 10 at random.
