For generations, fish and chips has fed millions of memories: eaten with greasy fingers on a seaside holiday, a pay-day treat at the end of the working week or a late-night supper on the way home from the pub.

    Fish and chips

That's probably how we've ended up with a National Fish and Chip Day, which, it seems, is today.

And did you know that Yorkshire has more chippies than anywhere else in the country?

That's according to the Leeds-based National Federation of Fish Friers, which says there are about 1,700 of them in our region - and apparently about one in five of us visit our nearest chip shop every week.

It's the first time the Terriers have been in the top division since 1972 and thousands of fans attended the team's victory parade earlier this week to celebrate promotion.

Supporters can have their picture taken with the club's new silverware at the Canalside training complex from 11:00 this morning.

The party's targeting the Sheffield Central constituency, where its candidate is former leader Natalie Bennett.

This is what she told BBC Radio Sheffield's Charlotte Rose:

Hello and welcome to BBC Local Live in Yorkshire on Thursday 1 June 2017.

We'll be with you throughout the day with all the latest news, sport, weather and travel updates.

We're starting with an unusual sight I saw yesterday.

This pike was taking it easy, basking and perusing potential prey in York's River Foss. The river was teeming with all kinds of quick snacks for it.

The sun seems to bring them to the surface - maybe it's to do with the water's oxygen content being changed by the intense heat?
