    The city centre offices of The Sheffield Star have been sold in a £3.6m deal.

    A statement on their website says completion of the deal is expected to take place by the end of June.

    The offices on York Street are occupied by sales and editorial staff who'll remain in the building for a short time before moving to new premises.

    York Street has served as the home of the publication for decades and the first Sheffield Daily Telegraph was published on the site in 1855.

  5. 'A wonderful attitude to life': Tributes to actor Peter Sallispublished at 07:44 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Tributes are being paid to Last of the Summer Wine actor, Peter Sallis.

    His agent confirmed he died peacefully at the age of 96 with his family by his side.

    Sallis played Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in the series, from its first episode in 1973, until its conclusion in 2010.

    It was filmed in and around Holmfirth, West Yorkshire and written by Roy Clarke, from Doncaster.

    Roy said Peter Sallis (pictured right with co-stars) was "a brave man who had to cope with failing eyesight."

    People across the country will observe a minute's silence this morning, in memory of the victims of the attack at London Bridge on Saturday night, in which seven people died.

    Last night, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, led a vigil for those killed and injured. Vigils were also held across Yorkshire.

    Flags on government buildings will remain at half-mast until this evening.

    A siren will be sounded at 11:00 in Sheffield city centre this morning, followed by a minute's silence at the Town Hall and other civic buildings.

    The silence will also be observed at York Minster, at Victoria Gardens in Leeds and outside City Hall in Bradford.

    The owners of a cafe in Leeds, which uses waste food to feed people, could be facing prosecution.

    Managers at the Real Junk Food Project, which has a café in Armley and a shop in Pudsey, have received a letter from trading standards officials, saying they they may be breaking the law by selling and using out-of-date food.

    The project intercepts surplus food from supermarkets and food banks, then decides whether the food is fit for human consumption, to highlight the issues of food waste.

    Adam Smith from the project says he hopes news of the summons will cause debate about the subject of food waste:

    Trading Standards says it can't comment on an ongoing investigation.

  8. 'Fingertip' river rescue in Yorkpublished at 06:50 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A woman's been saved from the River Ouse in York by two police officers.

    They were called out after somebody spotted the women in distress by the water on Kings Staith in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    By the time officers had arrived, she was fully submerged.

    One of the officers sprinted to a nearby jetty, and was able to lie on his front and grab the woman by her fingertips.

    She was then dragged to safety by the officer and his colleague and taken to York hospital for treatment.

  10. Ex-Lord Mayor of Leeds admits child porn chargespublished at 06:37 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A former Lord Mayor of Leeds has admitted making and distributing indecent photographs of children.

    Neil Taggart, who also served as a West Yorkshire Police Authority chairman and city councillor, pleaded guilty to eight child sex offences at Leeds Crown Court earlier.

    The 65-year-old has been sacked from the Labour Party after he was suspended in October, a party spokesman said.

    The crimes took place between 2007 and 2016, according to the Yorkshire Post, external.

    Taggart, of Marlowe Court, Garforth, is due to be sentenced on 4 July.

    In a statement, Labour said it had suspended him "as soon as the party became aware of the allegations he was facing".

    Leader of Leeds City Council, Judith Blake, said: "I condemn these despicable crimes in the strongest possible terms."
