    Police are urging vigilance after six people were arrested in connection with thefts from vehicles in the Selby area.

    Since the start of May there have been 43 reports of thefts from vehicles in the town of Selby and surrounding villages, including Hemingbrough, Cliffe, North Duffield and Barlby have also seen an increase in incidents.

  2. Police watchdog reopens inquiry over murder investigationpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission has reopened its investigation following the murder of a man in Rotherham last summer.

    It's looking at how South Yorkshire Police handled apparent threats against Craig Preston before his death in August 2016.

    The watchdog has said that based on the evidence so far, there's an indication of misconduct by a detective.

    Mr Preston - who was 34 and from Wath-Upon-Dearne - was found dead at the Woodhead Tunnels by dogwalkers.

    A man, woman and three teenage boys were found guilty of killing him last month.

    A woman from Halifax who had become addicted to playing bingo has been jailed for five years after she stole £245,000 from a Calderdale business to feed her habit.

    Nikki Conway, 37, was employed as the office manager at Uncle Ted's Organics and had a bingo gambling addiction of £1,000 a week.

    Conway, of Willowfield Crescent was responsible for the financial management of the company and used a secure key for internet banking.

    Conway stole the money by transferring cash from various accounts into her own bank accounts.

    Another care home in York could close by the end of the year.

    It's part of the city council's plans to replace what it calls outdated older people's homes with more modern ones.

    Woolnough House is a small care home with 15 permanent residents.

    They, their families and staff are now being consulted on plans to close it by the end of this year.

    Three other homes have already been closed in the last 18 months.

    A senior adult social care director says what they're doing will ensure that existing residents and future generations will have the best quality of life.

    A 74-year-old Bradford man, has been charged with the kidnap and indecent assault of a four-year-old girl in Keighley in 1978.

    George Frankland of Falcon Street is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court tomorrow.

    Armed police were sent to a street brawl in Sheffield last night after reports that a boy had been stabbed and some people had weapons in the fracas.

    South Yorkshire Police said two people were arrested suspicion of affray and some weapons were recovered.

    A 17-year-old boy was later found at a city hospital where he was being treated for stab wounds to his legs and back.

    Officers were altered by calls reporting two groups of people fighting in Spital Lane in Sheffield.

    A South Yorkshire Police officer has appeared in court in connection with a crash that left a motorist with serious spinal injuries.

    PC Gareth Lee, 26, was charged with causing injury by dangerous driving after the patrol car he was in collided with another vehicle in Sheffield.

    The collision happened on 23 October at the junction of Bellhouse Road and Ecclesfield Road.

    An Independent Police Complaints Commission inquiry has been launched.

    Mr Lee was bailed at Sheffield Magistrates' Court earlier and is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 18 July.

    The 23-year-old Australian made 17 appearances for the Reds last season, scoring once.

    Sir Vince Cable, who's originally from York, says he is a candidate to become Liberal Democrat leader.

    The former business secretary, who has served as deputy leader and acting leader in the past, is throwing his hat into the ring after Tim Farron said he would stand down this summer.

    Sir Vince, 74, has been a senior figure in the party for more than 20 years and won his Twickenham seat back at the general election.

    He was born into a working class family in York where his father, Len, was a craftsman at Rowntrees Chocolate factory and his mother, Edith, packed chocolates for rival firm,Terry's.

    He attended Nunthorpe Grammar School in the city.

    A public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire in London would find out the truth behind it better than coroners' inquests, the Shadow Housing Minister and Labour MP for Wentworth and Dearne, John Healey, has said.

    Seventy-nine people are believed to have died after a huge blaze at the west London tower block, which began at about 01:00 last Wednesday morning.

    But it turns out that Yorkshire's film industry is the fastest growing in the UK.

    New figures show the film and TV industry in Yorkshire is doing better than any other area of the UK, including the South East.

    Screen Yorkshire says the European Regional Development Fund has helped secure £157m worth of new business to the region.

    It says the work in the region is having an impact on the wider economy, including tourism.

    Security is to be stepped up for this Saturday's armed forces day in Scarborough.

    It's in response to the recent terror attacks in Manchester and London.

    Some roads and car parks will be closed earlier than normal ahead of Scarborough's 9th annual armed forces day.

    Both plain-clothed and uniformed police officers will also be patrolling the event along with specially-trained dogs.

    They're also appealing for the public to be vigilant to help make sure it's a safe and enjoyable day.

    Thousands of people are expected to see the many attractions, including the Red Arrows.

    Blueprints to build tens of thousands of homes are set to be approved in Bradford today.

    Bradford Council's local plan core strategy aims for more than 30,000 homes to be built in the city by 2030, and this will go before the authority's executive this afternoon.

    But some say that new homes are not what's needed and existing properties should be used instead of building on greenfield sites.
