Network Rail says there have been 2,000 near misses at level crossings in the last five years - and a common cause is people distracted because they're using their mobile.

The company's earmarked some crossings as high risk. They include Crossgates near Scarborough, Filey, Malton, Haxby and Strensall.

Network Rail's going to install geo-fencing, which creates a virtual boundary, triggering an alert when a mobile device enters the area, suggesting people put their phones away.

Five new Belgian Malinois puppies have been donated to the dog training school in Hillsborough, to be trained as general purpose police dogs.

Good, I'm glad I resisted that. Now have a look at these police pooches:

  7. Scientists baffled by seabird bonanza on Yorkshire cliffspublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

Scientists say they're baffled by a dramatic change in the number of seabirds making their home on the Yorkshire coast.

Over 400-thousand birds including gannets, puffins and razorbills, now live on a 17-mile stretch of coastline around Filey and Flamborough.

    GannetImage source, PA

The biggest increase has been seen among the Gannet population. Since 2000, the number of gannet pairs on the cliffs has shot up from 2,550 to 13,400.

RSPB scientists are trying to fathom exactly what has created such a huge population increase in a short space of time.

They say the success of a colony is the ability to raise chicks with steady supplies of food, and note that almost all gannet chicks survive, whereas the chicks of sea birds on other sites often perish.

There seem to be more large predatory fish like mackerel available in the part of the water in which they feed, but the truth is we don’t know really what’s going on and we would very much like to.”

They have also released a new image of what a new site could look like near the entrance to Sheffield Station.

If the broadcaster moved to the city it could bring up to 4,050 highly-skilled jobs to the city by 2027 and create an additional £1bn for the economy.

A government consultation is considering whether the broadcaster should move out of central London, with several cities in the north setting out their stalls.

In the documents, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust reveals it plans to shed 479 staff over the next 10 years.

Under the proposals all emergency, acute and high-risk planned care would be brought together at Calderdale Royal Hospital in neighbouring Halifax.
