People in North Yorkshire are to be asked what they make of plans for one single body to oversee both the police and fire services - a consultation's starting today.

The idea would be for the Police and Crime Commissioner to oversee both.

Conservative PCC, Julia Mulligan, says it is "not a merger" and that the services would remain separate.

She says a shared governance would save money, which could be put into frontline services.

One of the things she'll look at is whether firefighters and police officers could be based together in stations across the county.

Allan Charlesworth is the former Chief Constable of West Yorkshire, he says it's a bad idea and wouldn't work:

Contracts worth £6.6bn will also be awarded for work on the first stretch of the new high speed rail line between London and Birmingham.

The transport secretary said HS2 would "drive economic growth and productivity in the North and Midlands".

The decision over its route through the North of England has been delayed for several years due to a series of disagreements, the most controversial of which has been which route it should take through Sheffield.
