    Sexual health clinics in Sheffield will be allowed to provide a pill on the NHS which dramatically reduces the risk of being infected with HIV.

    Prep (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily pill that disables HIV before it gets a stranglehold in the body.

    Trials suggest it can cut the risk of being infected by up to 86%, external.

    NHS England has made the decision as part of a £10m trial.

    It comes a year after the NHS lost a legal battle to argue the drug should be provided by councils rather than the health service.

    Miners made redundant through the closure of Kellingley Colliery on the West Yorkshire-North Yorkshire border are to receive an additional payment.

    They had claimed they'd been shortchanged when the pit shut at the end of 2015 because they got smaller payouts than workers from Thoresby in Nottinghamshire.

    The National Union of Mineworkers says it's won its court case against UK Coal, and over 500 miners will now get the maximum of eight weeks pay.

  4. Screen Yorkshire backs Leeds for Channel 4 bidpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    Channel 4 should relocate to the Leeds City Region, despite similar bids from Sheffield and Hull, according to the boss of creative industries champion Screen Yorkshire.

    A government consultation is considering whether the broadcaster should move out of central London.

    Liverpool and Birmingham have also stated their interest in being home to the channel.

    In an article on Prolific North, external, Screen Yorkshire chief executive Sally Joynson says: "In a country as diverse as the UK, a national public service broadcaster needs to have a greater plurality of voices."

    The Leeds City Region is home to three million people and includes Leeds, Bradford, York, Harrogate, Calderdale, Kirklees, Barnsley Craven and Wakefield.

    A contract firm working at Eggborough power station, near Selby, says it is in talks with a union after scaffolders decided to take industrial action in a pay dispute.

    The Unite union claims that the contractor, Cape Industrial Services, is not paying its workers the agreed national hourly pay rate.

    The first of two 48-hour strikes is due to take place on 17 August.

    Now Cape Industrial Services says it is in talks with the Unite union and is committed to finding a solution.

  7. Fines for nuisance marketing calls - The complaintspublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    Earlier, we told you about the two Bradford companies fined for the sales calls they had made to people who had signed up to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).

    Safestyle UK and Virgo Home Improvements had both called people after they'd been asked not to.

    It emerged that neither firm had checked to see if people had opted out of receiving marketing calls under the TPS.

    Here's what some of the people who had complained about the companies said:

  8. Travelodge plans for Yorkshire expansionpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    Travelodge has announced plans for a dozen new hotels in Yorkshire.

    The news comes as the company opens its latest hotel at Layerthorpe in York, creating 47 new jobs - their fifth in the city.

    The chain already runs 34 hotels in Yorkshire and is now looking for sites for a further 12 in places including Knaresborough, Whitby, Thirsk and Northallerton.

    It says the new hotels would create up to 420 jobs.

    Police say almost 130 knives were handed in to police stations across North Yorkshire as part of a nationwide clampdown on knife crime last month.

    Knife collection bins were placed in Selby, Scarborough, York, Northallerton, Harrogate and Skipton police stations.

    Dave France, of North Yorkshire Police said: “Through our collection bins we have had over 130 weapons, in varying forms, handed in from standard kitchen knives, to hunting knives and Samurai swords.

    “We have also identified a number of retailers who think it’s okay to sell knives to under 18s and will be taking further action against these."

    Yorkshire has come second in a list of places where most people know and are friendly with those next door.

    Our county was beaten only by the West Midlands, which came top of the list.

    Here are a few of the key findings: ·

    • Of the people surveyed, 60% said they do not know their neighbours well or at all.
    • Sixty-two per cent said they would not feel confident about leaving a spare key with a neighbour.
    • Seventy-five per cent would not feel confident about letting a neighbour feed a pet when on holiday.

    Max Chambers, a former community cohesion adviser at Downing Street, say the UK "risks heading towards the slow death of the neighbourhood," as the Love Thy Neighbour report, published the figures.

    In response to the findings, Social cohesion charity, The Challenge, is calling on people to promise to share a cuppa with one neighbour during the month of August.

  12. Bradford companies fined for nuisance marketing callspublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    Two West Yorkshire businesses have been fined after bombarding people who had signed up to the Telephone Preference Service, external (TPS) with marketing calls.

    The Information Commissioner’s Office has issued fines totalling £150,000 to two firms in Bradford which, between them, sparked hundreds of complaints.

    HPAS Ltd who trade as Safestyle UK were fined £70,000 after the ICO and TPS received 264 complaints over 20 months.

    Laura Anderson Ltd who trade as Virgo Home Improvements were fined £80,000 following 440 complaints in 19 months.

    Both companies had contacted people after being explicitly told not to call again which is against the law. They had also not checked to see if people had signed up to the TPS.

    Plans have been submitted for a treetop adventure course in a Leeds park.

    Go Ape wants to open an attraction in Temple Newsam after a previous plan for Roundhay Park was scrapped.

    The plans for Roundhay Park were dropped after more than 3,000 people signed a petition against plans for the rope course.

    Go Ape says the attraction will create up to 30 jobs and bring new visitors to the park, it says the course would cover under 0.25% of the park's 1,500 acres.

    The plans have been put forward after bosses asked local people for their opinion. It's now up to the council to decide if the course will be built.

    Firefighters in South Yorkshire have issued a new call for businesses to install sprinklers.

    It comes after a fryer caught fire in the cafe at Asda on Aldwarke Lane (pictured) in Rotherham last month.

    South Yorkshire Fire Service says the store was "saved from suffering a serious blaze" thanks to having sprinklers fitted.

    In law, only businesses of more than 20,000 sq m are required to install sprinklers, but the fire service is advocating all businesses should get them fitted:

    There were 33 assaults on West Yorkshire Police officers and staff in the last week, according to the force's Chief Constable.

    That's compared to an average of 25 attacks per week in the county.

  20. Travel update: A1(M) delays to continue beyond middaypublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    The delays on the A1(M) in South Yorkshire at junction 34 near Blyth are likely to continue "beyond midday" according to police.

    Lanes have been closed southbound after a lorry carrying vegetables overturned.
