  6. Watch: All downhill for York's soapbox competitorspublished at 09:27 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

It was all downhill for York's would-be racing drivers yesterday as 50 soapbox teams competed against each other in the Micklegate Run.

The competitors headed down a 5m ramp before shooting down Micklegate - a steep, winding, cobbled hill in York city centre - in homemade carts.

Luckily, the route was lined with straw bales to capture the more adventurous drivers and, as you can see below, much fun ensued:

A pay and display parking ticket machine has been cut down and dragged away behind a vehicle in Leeds city centre.

    Pay and Display

Police say the incident happened on York Place between 04:10 and 04:20 on Monday morning.

Damage was caused to several parked cars during the theft, say police.

After the pay and display machine was removed, it was dragged behind a red Suzuki Vitara Jeep down Woodhouse Street towards Kirkstall Road.

Both the vehicle and the machine were later found abandoned on Scott Hall Road.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about it is being asked to contact police.

Customers travelling to Rotherham Central from Sheffield should travel to Swinton for a return service to Rotherham, it adds.

  10. Listen: Yorkshire and Lancashire fracking protesters unitepublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

Protesters from North Yorkshire and Lancashire say they'll stand united against proposed fracking in both counties.

The technique of drilling for difficult-to-reach shale gas could get under way in both counties by the end of the year.

But anti-fracking campaigners argue it can cause environmental damage, and that it is distracting energy firms and governments from investing in renewable sources of energy.

In North Yorkshire, Third Energy has been given the go-ahead to frack at a site near Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

These protesters have been outside a proposed fracking site near Blackpool for the last eight months and have this message for anti-fracking campaigners in North Yorkshire:

City of York Council has won a bid for £3.3m from the Department for Transport to help fund 24 new emission-free buses.

The new 18 double-deckers and six larger single-deckers will join the pre-existing 14-vehicle electric fleet.

When the buses arrive, about a third of all bus journeys will be on low-emission vehicles, York Council said.

There is no confirmed date for the new park-and-ride fleet to start operating.

It is hoped the double-deckers, which will have a 200kWh battery, will run all day on a single charge, the council said.

  12. Man seriously hurt in Leeds stabbingpublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

A 23-year-old man has been seriously hurt in a stabbing in Leeds.

Police say the attack, which happened at about 17:45 yesterday on Chapeltown Road, was "an isolated incident".

Two women were also hurt in the aftermath of the attack, one needing treatment for a head injury.

Ch Supt Mabs Hussain said: "This assault happened on the Leeds West Indian Carnival route so there were a lot of people in the area the time of the offence.

"We have spoken to a number of people, but would like to hear from anyone who has either witnessed the incident itself or anyone who has any information."

  13. Listen: Yorkshire charity criticises government's counter-terror strategypublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

A Rotherham-based charity is calling for part of the government's counter-terrorism plan to be scrapped.

Known as Prevent, the strategy is designed to support people at risk of joining extremist groups and carrying out terrorist activities.

However, it's been criticised by Just Yorkshire, a campaigning charity which describes itself as "promoting racial justice, human rights and equality".

In its new report, Rethinking Prevent, external, Just Yorkshire says Prevent is "based upon a foundation of Islamophobia and racism" and is "ineffective and counterproductive".

But Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal, who works for the Prevent programme in universities and colleges across West Yorkshire, says the strategy is working:

  17. Landslip-hit North Yorkshire road could move across the valleypublished at 07:00 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

A road prone to landslips could be diverted to the other side of a valley to protect the route.

    A59Image source, Gordon Hatton

The A59 between Skipton and Harrogate has a history of landslips above the road to the west of Blubberhouses at Kex Gill.

The most recent landslip in January 2016 led to the road being shut for eight weeks.

When closed, a diversion of more than six miles through towns unsuitable for the traffic is used.

North Yorkshire County Council has strengthened the banks at the side of the road and improved drainage.

However, there remains a high risk of further landslips leading to long-term closures, the authority said.
