  3. 'In demand': Big turnout for Dewsbury's free mobile dental clinicspublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

A charity which has started holding free mobile dental clinics in Dewsbury says the turnout on the first day shows its services are in demand.

DentAid is funded by a grant of more than £7,000 and aims to help those who're struggling to get onto a dental clinic's books or who may be suffering from poor oral hygiene.

Staff have volunteered their time to help give check-ups, fillings and other treatments.

It comes after a recent BBC investigation revealed the difficulties some families face in trying to find an NHS dentist in the county.

Andy Evans, the charity's CEO, says he was surprised by how many people showed up:

  7. Protesters gather at North Yorkshire fracking sitepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

About 60 protesters have gathered outside a site in North Yorkshire where fracking is due to start soon.

    Protesters

Today is the first day that lorries carrying specialist fracking equipment are allowed onto the site at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

It follows 10 days of stand-offs with protesters trying to stop some maintenance vehicles from getting access to the site.

Organisers say they are expecting more protesters to arrive as the day goes on, with several moved away from the entrance to the site yesterday after causing an obstruction.

Last May, Third Energy was granted permission to carry out the technique of extracting gas from shale at the Kirby Misperton site, a process which involves pumping water and chemicals deep into the ground.

  9. 'Ridiculous' to elect a mayor for South Yorkshire - Barnsley MPpublished at 09:30 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    Mick Lunney
    BBC Local Live, Sheffield

An election for a mayor for South Yorkshire would be "ridiculous" at the present time, says Barnsley Central Labour MP Dan Jarvis.

A mayoral election would be part of a devolution deal for the region, but South Yorkshire's four councils seem increasingly divided on how the idea should work.

Yesterday, two of the four authorities voted against a £900m devolution deal for South Yorkshire, with the leaders of Barnsley and Doncaster saying they want to pursue a Yorkshire-wide deal.

Yet an election for a mayor for South Yorkshire is still due to go ahead next year regardless.

Dan Jarvis says as things stand that would be a pointless and costly exercise:

  10. Funeral costs in Kirklees could be on the uppublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

Burial costs in part of West Yorkshire could almost double over the next five years if officials approve plans to increase charges at a meeting later.

    CoffinImage source, Creatas

Currently a burial in Kirklees costs £989, but this could rise to almost £1,800 by 2021 if new council plans get the go-ahead.

The authority says it's updating its business model and charging structure for its bereavement services.

It claims it will give more choice to customers by increasing costs for some burials and will mean it can remove charges for the burial of those under the age of 18.

There are also plans to develop what's being called a Kirklees Affordable Funeral as well as the introduction of new charges for out-of-hours burials and those held on Friday afternoons.

Latest figures obtained by the BBC show 102 emergency calls to North Yorkshire Police were abandoned during June - that's up nearly 40% on last year's figure.

A total of 32 forces across the country have experienced a rise in the number of calls not answered, BBC Freedom of Information requests have shown.

The BBC has seen correspondence between police leaders expressing "concern" about high call volumes.

A Police Federation spokesman says resources are at a critical level and public safety has been compromised.

The Home Office says it expects crimes reported to police to be investigated thoroughly.

  14. Listen: Friends gather for tribute to 'heart of gold' Leeds studentpublished at 07:56 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

Friends of a Leeds student who died at the weekend are due to gather together for a special tribute later.

Police are still trying to work out what happened to 21-year-old Harry Loker, who was found with serious injuries in the Hyde Park area on Friday morning.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Tonight's open mic night at the Fenton pub will be dedicated to Mr Loker, who friends say had a "heart of gold".

Cameron Robson says it's difficult to come to terms with what's happened:

    Jenny Eells
    Reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

A Sheffield family has raised health concerns over the demolition of the city's former Hallam Tower Hotel.

The landmark, off Fulwood Road, is currently being torn down to make way for a new development.

The building had fallen into a state of disrepair since closing its doors more than a decade ago.

I've been to meet Thom Clutterbuck, who says the dust from the work to bring the building down is causing problems to some local residents:

Licences have also been granted for companies to explore for gas in West Yorkshire.

Terry Bailey, 39, was assaulted in the early hours of 29 August and died in hospital later.

The men are not believed to be directly involved, but could have information about an argument that took place.

They got on a train at Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly, said British Transport Police.

Det Ch Insp Glen Alderson said: "We believe they may have witnessed a verbal altercation that took place before the fatal attack, so it's really important we talk to them."

Daniel Goodall, 56, of Poplar Mount, Bramley, Leeds, and Jamie Loftus, aged 28, of no fixed address, have been charged with manslaughter and are due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 28 September.
