  1. Leeds research blames mobile phones for pupils' lack of sleeppublished at 08:17 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

Research carried out in West Yorkshire suggests many children are struggling at school because they're not getting enough sleep.

    Sleep

A study by Leeds University shows over a third of primary school pupils get by on less than eight hours a night.

Mobile phones and computers are being blamed for keeping them awake.

The findings revealed that, despite the NHS recommendation of ten hours, 36% of primary school age children get eight hours or less sleep a night and 15% get seven hours or less.

Researchers at the university say such low levels of sleep are likely to have a negative impact on a child’s ability to function in the classroom and reach key milestones.

The discussion follows a consultation on the potential introduction of by-laws that would seek to establish "no vehicle idling" areas outside schools, hospitals, care homes and other locations within the city, to help improve air quality.

A similar ban outside schools has already been introduced in London where Westminster Council hands out £80 fines to "car idlers, external".

A public meeting will be held this evening.
