  1. Ex-police chief's conduct under High Court scrutinypublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

    The conduct of the former Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police will be further scrutinised today on day two of a judicial review at the High Court.

    Former Chief Constable, Mark Gilmore, claims West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson acted unlawfully, by failing to complete a disciplinary procedure against him.

    A series of misconduct allegations were made against Mr Gilmore in 2014 while he was suspended from duty as a result of a separate investigation into his relationship with a car dealership.

    The court heard more than 50 officers had made allegations against Mr Gilmore.

    These included abusing overtime payments, making inappropriate sexual comments to female colleagues and asking staff to pick his wife up from the airport.

    Mr Gilmore denies all allegations of misconduct and the case continues today.

    An 86-year-old from West Yorkshire, who walked 86 miles for charity, has smashed his fundraising target.

    Jeffrey Long was hoping to raise £1,000 for the Royal British Legion, but his campaign was given some help after the comedian, Jason Manford, posted a link to his page on Twitter.

    Jeffrey, who has an MBE for his charity work, has now raised more than £59,000.

    "Inspirational teachers" are being used in an online recruitment campaign to attract more talented teachers into Bradford.

    A new website's been created, external allowing people to find out more about the opportunities to train and work in Bradford’s schools.

    Ten inspirational teachers and school leaders from the district (like Suki James pictured above) have been chosen to be Bradford for Teaching Ambassadors.

    And a new calendar's being launched this evening in Rotherham.

    No glamorous soap stars or singers on this one. It's called the Fat Lads Calendar.

    The men behind it describe themselves as "middle-aged fat blokes" who are raising money for Prostate Cancer UK and Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

    Further steps may be taken next year to tackle what's been called "seagull muggings" in Scarborough and Whitby.

    Councillors meet later when they're expected to agree to calling in a specialist company for a second year running, to remove seagull nests and eggs.

    Almost 500 nests and more than 850 eggs were removed this summer.

  7. Third of calls to North Yorkshire police 'abandoned'published at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

    New figures show that almost a third of calls to North Yorkshire Police's 101 non-emergency number this summer were abandoned.

    That's compared to just 10% during the same period in 2015.

    The figures are from a new report by the county's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Julia Mulligan, into the Force Control Room and looks at July, August and September.

    There was a massive spike in the number of calls to the force during the summer, that's said to now be reducing.

    The PCC says there are "no quick fixes," but there is an "intensive recruitment and training programme" for call-handlers in place.

    She hopes there'll be a significant improvement next year.

  9. Northallerton teenage terror arrests: Police deadline loomspublished at 07:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

    Counter Terror police will have to decide later today whether to release or charge two teenage boys from North Yorkshire they've been questioning.

    The pair, who are both aged 14 and from Northallerton, were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism.

    They're being held at a West Yorkshire police station.

    A number of properties were searched in the town earlier this week.

    In a letter to parents, Northallerton School and Sixth Form College head Chris Byrne said they were working with police to prioritise student safety.

    The letter said: "Police continue to investigate with an open mind to establish what, if any, offences have been committed.

  12. Hillsborough disaster: Review of families' experiences publishedpublished at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

    A report about the experiences of the Hillsborough families will be published later today.

    On 15 April 1989, there was overcrowding on the terraces of Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium at the start of an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs. Ninety-six fans were fatally injured.

    Inquests have found that the 96 victims were unlawfully killed. The youngest was aged just 10, the oldest was 67.

    The former Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, was asked by the government to carry out the review, after the conclusion of the inquests in April last year.

    He's spoken to relatives of the 96 victims about what they've been through since 1989.

    The report is expected mid-morning.

  13. Six men arrested over Leeds shotgun 'murder attempt'published at 06:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

    Six men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shotgun was fired at a car.

    A 22-year-old man was in his BMW on Back Maud Avenue, Beeston, on Saturday when a blast damaged the car. He was not injured.

    Armed officers arrested one man in Leeds city centre on Tuesday and a second in Whinmoor.

    Four men were also arrested by armed officers when a vehicle was stopped in Bradford, West Yorkshire Police said.

    The Passat car from which the shot was fired was later found burned out, said the force.
