  1. Public consultation for Drax's coal to gas power planspublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    Plans for a gas-fired power and battery facility at a UK power plant have gone out to public consultation.

    Drax said it wanted to switch from coal-fired power generation to gas.

    It notified the planning inspectorate in September about its intention to upgrade two of its coal-fired units and build a 200-megawatt battery storage at its site near Goole.

    Last year, the government said it wanted to phase out coal power by 2025 in a bid to cut carbon emissions.

    More than half of Drax's current output is from biomass after it switched three of its units to burning eco-friendly wood pellets in 2013.

    Under the proposals, the power station said it would create a 3.6 gigawatt gas generation system and a new gas pipeline for electricity to be exported to the National Grid.

    Drax CEO Andy Koss said the plans could secure the future of the plant beyond 2025.

    People living in Drax, Selby and Goole have until Saturday to view the proposals.

    A no confidence vote in Leeds City Council's housing policy has been defeated.

    Conservative opposition councillors forced the vote after their leader, Andrew Carter, criticised delays in delivering 66,000 new homes.

    The council's Labour group, which controls the council, defended its actions saying it is waiting for clarifications from the government.

  4. 'Slow walk' protest at Kirby Misperton fracking sitepublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    A group of 20 protesters have staged a "slow walk" protest near a site in North Yorkshire where fracking is expected to start by the end of this year.

    Campaigners walked in front of a convoy of vehicles on their way along Habton Road in Kirby Misperton this morning, delaying vehicles by about 20 minutes.It's the third time this week a similar protest has been facilitated by police.

    At the weekend about 200 people also took part in a trade union anti-fracking march.

    Supt Lindsey Robson, from North Yorkshire Police, said: "We need to balance the rights, needs and wishes of everyone at the site, including those who want to assemble and protest safely and peacefully.

    "Every day, officers will engage with the protest community, explaining clearly what is acceptable in terms of safety and reasonableness."

    North Yorkshire County Council says it will replace it with a new glass fibre bridge in this financial year.

    Twitter has limited its users to 140 characters in their messages on the platform...until now.

    Users can now send out tweets of up to 280 characters, and some of them have been having fun with the new limit.

    Case in point: Yorkshire County Cricket Club, who've been able to list every time they've won the County Championship thanks to the longer posts now allowed:

    Two people have been injured, one seriously, by a hit-and-run driver in Rotherham.

    They were struck by a car, thought to have been a Vauxhall Vectra, on Picadilly Road, in Swinton, on Monday night.

    A woman remains in hospital and a man was less seriously hurt.

    Police are still looking for the car, external involved and its driver and are appealing for witnesses.

  8. 'North Yorkshire NHS funding needs to be addressed' - Campaignerspublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    A public meeting's due to be held in Malton, North Yorkshire, later to help health bosses find out where people think savings can be made in local NHS services.

    The Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning group says it has a deficit of just over £1.5m, which could rise to about £5m by next spring.

    It's one of three NHS organisations in North Yorkshire placed into financial special measures with their spending capped. They have a combined deficit of more than £30m.

    Nigel Ayre, from the campaign group Healthwatch North Yorkshire, says local residents have been "waiting for this day to come".

    "We're glad that people are having this conversation with the public. But this is an historic problem and I think these sort of conversations at a local level are not the way to solve them.

    "North Yorkshire has historically been underfunded in NHS services and I think that is something that really needs to be addressed."

    Fitzalan Square in Sheffield city centre is to enjoy a major makeover.

    Here's what's planned:

    An area leading from Paternoster Row up to Fitzalan Square is included in the scheme, which the city council dubs the Knowledge Gateway because it runs past Sheffield Hallam University.

    More pedestrianisation will also be carried out as part of the work, a far cry from the scene below showing how Fitzalan Square used to look.

    A two-year-old boy has died at a house in Huddersfield this morning.

    Emergency services were called just before 07:30 to a house on Banks Road in Golcar.

    When they arrived they found the boy with serious injuries and he died a short time later.

    West Yorkshire Police say they have a cordon around the house as they investigate what happened - but say they're not treating the incident as suspicious.

    Drax power station wants to stop generating electricity from coal and switch to burning gas.

    People living near the power station have the chance to look over the plans at meetings over the next few days.

    York City manager Martin Gray has signed goalkeeper Adam Bartlett from his former club Darlington.

    City have paid a fee for the 31-year-old, who goes straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Alfreton.

    Bartlett had previously turned down a move to City because he wanted to stay in part-time football.

    On a busy day at Bootham Crescent, City loanee James Gray has also extended his stay at the club, signing a contract until the end of the season.

    A 13-year-old girl has been left seriously hurt after being hit by a car in Leeds whose driver then failed to stop.

    A black car, possibly a Vauxhall Corsa, was seen being driven in an "erratic" manner in Belle Isle before the teenager was hit on Old Run Road, near the junction with West Grange Drive, at about 17:00 yesterday.

    The girl was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where she is still being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

    Anyone who saw what happened, or who saw the car involved prior to the collision, is being asked to get in touch with police.

    A statue designed to highlight the skills and significance of the women who played a vital role in steelmaking in Sheffield during two world wars is now up for a national award.

    The Women of Steel bronze stands outside Sheffield City Hall after a public appeal raised more than £160,000 to help pay for it.

    It's the work of sculptor Martin Jennings and it's in the running for the Marsh Awards, external for public sculpture tonight.

    Sheffield City Council, which commissioned the work, said it had been important to recognise the women who were conscripted to work in factories and steel mills.

    They took on roles that were often dangerous and physically demanding, the council said.

    The owners of Drax power station in North Yorkshire want to completely stop it generating electricity from coal and switch it to gas under new plans.

    Drax generates 7% of the UK's electricity at its power station near Selby and Drax Power, which runs the plant, says it aims to stop burning coal at the site in the next eight years.

    People living near the power station have the chance to look over the proposals at a meeting in Selby tonight.
