  12. Could Leeds' greenbelt be protected?published at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2017

    Richard Edwards
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Leeds

Thirty-three green belt sites across Leeds could be protected from development.

    Greenbelt in LeedsImage source, Google

Arguments gone backwards and forwards in the city for years about where new homes should be built but the protection of these sites will be a long process.

Leeds City Council's development plans panel meets on Tuesday and panel members will be asked to agree to start a public consultation over whether these 33 sites should be protected from house building.

If that consultation is agreed, the council can't just take the 33 out of something called the site allocations plan, instead, removing them would have to be approved by the council's executive board, 99 councillors and the public.

If all those stars fall into line, the housing part of the site allocations plan would be put before government inspectors, then Leeds's house-building target could be reduced from 66,000 - something green-belt campaigners and opposition councillors have been keen to see.

The Sheffield MP has reiterated calls for NHS England to stop commissioning beds at the private mental health hospital after a catalogue of failings.

Parents and former patients have contacted Louise to share their own experiences of being able to self-harm, access ligatures and implements with ease and of the inadequacies of patient observation, which have led to several attempted suicides.

    Louise Haigh
    Quote Message

Serious problems persist and it is an utter disgrace that vulnerable adolescents and children continue to be left in substandard conditions. The lack of mental health beds nationwide is forcing vulnerable people into conditions no one should have to put up with"
