  1. South Yorkshire Police focus on drink-driverspublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

South Yorkshire Police are being "Adventurous" in getting their messages across in the run-up to Christmas.

They've devised their own advent calender.

Here's their latest missive: Day four: If you were drinking last night, you could still be over the limit today and our toy friends are demonstrating the consequences here.

The force insist no toy people were harmed in the making of today's message.

  2. Yorkshire sees the whole of the moonpublished at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

Here, as promised earlier, a small selection of the BBC Weather Watcher pictures we've received, of the current "supermoon."

    Moon

Because the moon orbits the earth in an oval trajectory, at certain times it's nearer the earth than at others.

It's currently 16,000 miles closer to earth than usual.

    Moon

Last year the moon made its closest approach to earth since 1948 - it will not be that close again until 25 November 2034.

    Moon

It's now 222,761 miles from earth, closer than its average 238,900 miles.

The proper name for a "supermoon" is named after its proximity to the earth.

The point of the moon's orbit closest to earth is called perigee, so it's called a perigee moon.

Perhaps The Waterboy's song, The Whole of the Moon, was written at this time of year.

  3. Thousands of homes 'empty across Yorkshire'published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

More than 22,000 homes in Yorkshire are empty - with many uninhabitable - according to government figures.

    Empty

West Yorkshire is the worst affected area with more than 11,000 empty houses in the county.

The news comes as the number of homeless people and those on social housing waiting lists are on the rise.

There are currently no powers available to force an owner to rent out their property if it is vacant.

  4. Protesters blockade council contractor's Sheffield depotpublished at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    Reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

A group of protesters have tied themselves together outside the depot of a contractor connected to tree-felling in Sheffield.

Acorn provides chipping machines to the main contractor Amey.

The action is part of an ongoing protest over the decision to fell some of Sheffield's street trees.

    Protest

The blockade at the site involves nine protesters connected with climbing rope, preventing workers leaving the depot in Darnall.

Police have attended, but have now left, and the situation continues.

Some Acorn workers have left the depot on foot, but vehicles have been unable to leave the premises.

  5. Whitby's closer look at the moonpublished at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

Yorkshire's skywatchers have been catching glimpses of this month's "supermoon" - when the moon appears larger and brighter in the sky.

It happens when the moon reaches its closest point to earth, known as a perigee moon.

Here it is above Whitby Abbey. Looks a lot closer than the 250,000 miles away it actually is doesn't it.

Last year the moon made its closest approach to earth since 1948 - it will not be that close again until 25 November 2034.

Nasa has called this weekend's sighting the first in a "supermoon trilogy", externalover the next two months, with others to come on 1 January and 31 January.

The BBC Weather Watchers' folders are full of great shots of the shiny rock.

We'll put together a gallery of them for you later.

  6. Five-star hotel could replace Sheffield's central librarypublished at 07:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

The BBC has seen proposals put together by Sheffield council to convert the central library into a five-star hotel.

    Library

A new tower block, which could be 27 storeys tall, is being proposed alongside the existing library.

Last year the council said a Chinese investor was keen to develop a hotel in the city centre, as part of a £220m investment package in South Yorkshire.

The library facility would move elsewhere in the city centre, while Graves Art Gallery would remain in the building with full public access, Sheffield council said.

The central library and Graves Gallery were opened in 1934 by the Queen Mother, then Duchess of York, but the listed building is now in poor condition.

Last year the council said about £30m was needed to bring it up to modern standards.

  7. Scarborough theatre to get £500,000 refurbishmentpublished at 07:32 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough is to get a £500,000 facelift.

    SJT

The foyer and box office will get an upgrade and a new environmentally-friendly lighting system will be installed in the Round auditorium.

It comes as the demolition of the town's Futurist Theatre has been confirmed.

The theatre will close for two months from January for refurbishments, which will be paid for by the Arts Council and public donations.

Writing on Twitter, he said he grabbed on to the vehicle to stop it "swaying in the wind".

PC Willis, known as Motorway Martin to his followers, said he couldn't "begin to describe [his] relief" when firefighters arrived.

The force said young men made up the largest proportion of offenders but there was a growing problem with motorists aged over 35.

Sgt Gary Roper said the campaign was about "driving home the message that drinking and driving is totally unacceptable no matter what age you are".

Last December, 168 people were charged with drink or drug-driving in the region.

The campaign images include a number of older drivers holding up placards highlighting situations where people might be tempted to drink before driving.
