    Counter-terrorism police say yesterday's raids in Sheffield and Chesterfield were about public safety.

    A number of addresses were raided in an effort to thwart a suspected terrorist attack being planned for the festive period. Four people were arrested.

    Police are appealing for help to find a woman missing from York.

    Suzanne Greening, 25, was last seen in York city centre at about 15:00 yesterday.

    She was wearing a stripey orange and red top, blue jeans and a navy blue hooded coat.

    Officers say she may be travelling to Birmingham by train.

    Anyone who sees her, or knows where she is, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

    A community poll closes today over a choice of devolution proposals in Barnsley and Doncaster.

    The choices are a wider Yorkshire or a smaller Sheffield City Region devolution.

    Under the terms of the Sheffield City Region deal, external, which was agreed in 2015, an elected mayor will have powers over transport budgets and strategic planning and access to £30m per year for 30 years.

    The "One Yorkshire" proposal was first put forward in August, when 17 of the 20 councils in the county said they wanted to pursue a county-wide deal, arguing that it promised collective clout.

    It’s too late to vote via post but people can vote online until 12 noon today.

    This poll was agreed to in November and the results are not legally binding.

    The daughter of a York couple who died in the Manchester Arena bomb attack last May has been talking about the moment she realised her parents had been killed.

    Marcin and Angelika Klis, were waiting at the venue to collect their daughters, when the explosion happened.

    Their daughter, Alex, posted the last picture her parents had taken in Manchester online, in an effort to try to find them.

    A group of Tibetan monks will be chanting at a fracking site in Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire today.

    The Dalai Lama's Gyuto Monks of Tibet, say they are performing to show solidarity with protesters, who have been living near the well for months.

    Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at rock to release the gas inside.

    Opponents say it can cause water contamination, earthquakes and vehicles going to and from the site could lead to noise and traffic pollution.

    Gas company Third Energy is expected to begin the fracking process in the new year.

    They maintain the process of extracting shale gas is safe.

    This is the scene in Burngreave in Sheffield - one of a number of properties raided by police yesterday.

    It's part of an ongoing operation which officers say is part of an effort to thwart a potential terrorist act over the festive period.

    Another property in Chersterfield was raided by counter-terrorism officers and searches will resume today.

    Four men have been arrested.

    A road has been closed in North Yorkshire after a car struck a bridge and the bridge partially collapsed.

    As a result there's queueing traffic on the A684 between Northallerton Road and Back Lane.

    This will affect traffic from Northallerton to the A1(M) at J51.

    Police say the road will remain closed throughout the morning rush hour.

  10. Doncaster fisherman to sue farm over 'No Polish' signpublished at 07:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2017

    An angler from Doncaster is raising money to take a fishery to court after it displayed a sign forbidding Polish and Eastern Bloc fishermen from using it.

    Rado Papiewski, whose originally from Poland, has crowdfunded £5,000 to pay for a private prosecution and have the sign in Oxford removed.

    Mr Papiewski runs a project called Building Bridges,, externalfor the Angling Trust, which aims to "educate and integrate" anglers from other countries.

    The owner of Field Farm Fisheries in Oxfordshire said he had caught some anglers stealing fish.

    Billy Evans a former Conservative councillor, has had similar signs on his land since 2009.

    He said: "I shall still stand up for what I believe in."

    Campaigners in Calderdale are celebrating after plans for a waste incinerator near Sowerby Bridge (pictured) were thrown out by councillors last night.

    The planning committee at Calderdale Council rejected the scheme, saying it wasn't satisfied with the answers given over health and environmental concerns.

    Police are appealing for information about a missing teenager believed to be in the Boroughbridge or Ripon area.

    John Barker, 14, from Skelton-on-Ure near Ripon, was reported missing from his home address last Friday.

    He was seen at the junction of Horsefair and Fishergate in Boroughbridge at around 21:00 on Sunday evening by a police officer, but made off when approached.

    John is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall, with a pale complexion and short fair hair, blue eyes and a local accent.

  15. UK 'Christmas terror plot': Police searches resumepublished at 06:39 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2017

    Counter-terror police are to resume searches of two properties after an alleged Islamist terror plot set to happen at Christmas was stopped.

    Armed officers and an Army bomb disposal squad were involved in raids on five properties in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire on Tuesday.

    Four men arrested under the Terrorism Act remain in custody.

    Searches at scenes in Burngreave, Sheffield, and at a house in Chesterfield will continue later.

    A 31-year-old man was arrested after the bomb squad cordoned off a street in Chesterfield.

    Three other men aged 22, 36 and 41 were arrested in the Burngreave and Meersbrook areas of Sheffield.

    The cordon around one of the properties - the Fatima Community Centre on Brunswick Road in Burngreave - was extended on Tuesday afternoon and the bomb disposal unit attended.

    All four suspects were detained on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, external.
