Hull Foodbank says has been providing, on average, about 500 food packages every month since January, with the Easter Holidays particularly busy with families.

Manager Russ Barlow said every day they see people who are on universal credit and the main issue is the five-week wait for the benefit to come through.

He said: "The majority of people we see are facing significant issues around that wait and they just don't have the resources to last that long.

"People in Hull shouldn't have to use a food bank, the benefit system should be there to catch people."

Universal credit works by merging six different benefits for working age people into one monthly payment.

The Department for Work and Pensions say universal credit is available to claimants on day one and that it isn't driving the overall use of food banks.
