  6. PM urges cystic fibrosis drug deal after Hull boy's letterpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 12 June 2019

The Prime Minister has urged a pharmaceutical company to reach a deal with the NHS over a vital cystic fibrosis drug after a letter from a Hull boy calling for action.

    Okrambi

The House of Commons heard how seven-year-old Oliver Ward wrote to Theresa May about Orkambi, which is currently too expensive for the NHS to fund.

Labour MP for Hull East, Karl Turner, said: "In his letter he pleaded with the prime minister saying why am I still waiting, I need these medicines before I get too sick."

Last year hundreds of children wrote to Mrs May asking her to intervene in the stalemate between NHS England and Vertex, the company that holds the licence to market Orkambi in the UK.

At the time she said there was an ongoing dialogue with the drug company and she hoped for a "speedy resolution to the negotiations", but there seems to have been little progress since then.

But today she revealed that NHS England had now made a "revised and improved" offer to Vertex.

She said: "I believe Vertex should now accept the offer NHS England has put on the table so that this drug does become available to Oliver and others."
