  9. Infected Blood Inquiry comes to Leedspublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

A public inquiry into the contamination of blood products thought to have killed more than 2,000 people comes to Leeds today.

Treatment bottleImage source, FACTOR VIII/MARC MARNIE

The inquiry is examining how thousands of people were infected with hepatitis C and HIV from contaminated blood they were given in the 1970s and 80s.

About 5,000 people with haemophilia, a genetic condition which prevents blood from clotting properly, were infected when they were given blood products to help their blood clot.

Britain was struggling to keep up with demand for the treatment - known as clotting agent Factor VIII - and so supplies were imported from the US.

But much of the human blood plasma used to make the product came from donors such as prison inmates, who sold their blood.

The inquiry comes after decades of campaigning by victims, who claim the risks were never explained and the scandal was subsequently covered up.

Public hearings of the Infected Blood Inquiry will take place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Wellington Street.

  18. Nurseries in poorest areas 'face closure over funding gap'published at 06:30 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

A shortfall in government funding means some nurseries in England's poorest areas, including at least one in Bradford, could face closure, a charity has said.

    A nursery playground

A report by the Early Years Alliance found 17% of childcare providers surveyed in the most deprived areas of the country "anticipate closure in the next 12 months".

The survey of more than 350 nurseries and childminders found 43% of providers had been forced to cut back on learning resources and 19% said they had lowered the quality of food they gave to children.

Paula Williams, who runs a nursery in Bradford, said it could be forced to close if government funding did not increase.

All the 48 children at the centre are supported by the government's scheme, with no fee-paying students and Ms Williams said 80% of the budget was spent on staff costs.
