LUFC at 100: 'A dream come true to play for Leeds United'published at 12:44 British Summer Time 17 October 2019
On the day Leeds United celebrates its 100th birthday, a former striker who was born and raised in the city has been reflecting on his association with the club, describing playing for Leeds as "a dream come true".
Noel Whelan came through the Leeds United youth system and ultimately made his debut as an 18-year-old in May 1993.
"Me and Leeds United go way back to when I was a young boy, I'd go with my brother to watch the games at Elland Road," he said.
"When I played my first game I was still cleaning Gary Speed's and David Batty's boots and all of a sudden I was playing next to my heroes.
"I remember seeing my name on the team sheet that said I might be playing. My heart just started beating and beating and beating.
"If I could have played just one game and put on that Leeds United shirt I'd have lived my dream and died happy," he concluded.
