The North York Moors National Park Authority is to consider launching a separate bid to its Yorkshire Dales counterpart for recognition from the International Dark Sky Association later this year to join 16 places worldwide as a designated Dark Sky Reserve.

Other Dark Sky Reserves include the Alpes Azur Mercantour in France and the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand,

The two Yorkshire-based park bodies already work closely together on the Dark Skies Festival, which last year attracted about 8,000 people and showed an economic benefit of almost £300,000 over two weeks in the North York Moors alone.

As stargazing takes place in autumn, winter and spring, it is hoped being granted the same status as Cevennes National Park, in France, Mont-Mégantic in Quebec and River Murray in Australia will boost North Yorkshire’s economy by bringing thousands of visitors to the areas in the low tourist season months.

A report due to go before a meeting of the North York Moors authority states it has already completed many of the criteria and with funding from the Sirius Mineral’s potash mine near Whitby £100,000 of grants would be offered to tackle light pollution over the next two years.

The events were being held after about 500 homes and about 400 businesses were flooded in early February, with about 100mm of rain falling in one 12-18 hour period.

A number of drop-ins organised by the Environment Agency have already been held, but the decision to postpone the remaining three was taken to help protect people, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable, from coronavirus.

Drop-in events were due to be held at Brighouse Civic Hall on Thursday and on Friday at Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club.

But the Environment Agency said it would work with partners to re-arrange the events when the health emergency situation improves.

Jo Arnold, senior flood risk adviser for Calderdale, said: “It is really disappointing to have to postpone these events as we had a good turnout to the ones held last week in Mytholmroyd, Elland and Todmorden and they were really useful."

"Listing the structure will help ensure that it continues to be enjoyed for generations to come,” she added.
