The basking shark was spotted in the water trying to beach itself at Filey in North Yorkshire, on Thursday.

The beach was closed while a lifeboat crew tried to prevent it from beaching and to get it back out to sea.

Sea Watch's Robin Petch said: "It was in the shallows in Filey Bay trying to beach itself and members of the public, the Coastguard and the RNLI were in attendance trying to stop it and persuade it to go out to sea.

"This one was a little under four-and-a-half metres, so it was a young one, not a juvenile but not quite an adult.

"There was a vet in attendance and in the end they decided the best thing to do for the animal was to euthanise it," Mr Petch added.

Basking sharks are the second largest fish in the oceans. Despite their size they only feed on zooplankton and are not considered a danger to humans.

  5. Yorkshire shoppers urged to 'be sensible' over face maskspublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

From today, coverings are compulsory in enclosed public spaces such as supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, transport hubs, banks and takeaways.

Police can hand out fines of up to £100 to those who do not comply.

Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, said: “Controlling the spread of the virus is a vital part of trying to return to a more normal way of life.

“Clearly, it's never going to be possible for officers to respond to every report of someone not wearing a mask, so we need everyone to be sensible and to do their part to ensure we stop the spread of coronavirus."

Meanwhile, South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, said: "The primary responsibility for ensuring people wear masks has to lie with the shops themselves, because there simply aren't enough officers to police this."

Lockdown has inspired people to take their sheds to more imaginative heights, with two new categories catering to those who have used the time working on their garden outposts.

The new categories in the Shed of the Year awards are Lockdown Repurpose, for people who have transformed their existing shed in response to the pandemic, and Lockdown New-build, for those who have started from scratch.

The shortlist for the Repurpose category includes Sarah McGoldrick, who responded to the PPE shortage in the early days of the pandemic by supplying frontline NHS staff with visors from her shed workshop in Sheffield (above).

Brandon, who is from Wombwell, almost went to bed when The Reds' future looked destined for League One.

But a late winner from Clarke Oduor means Gerhard Struber's side were safe, prompting Brandon to call BBC Radio Sheffield's Praise or Grumble phone-in.

He said: "I think we've done absolutely brilliant because I always doubted Struber. I thought, 'At the moment we're not going to do owt, he's not bringing the subs on', but I take my hat off to him, he's pushed us through to the end."

His call went viral, with Barnsley then offering to send him a signed shirt from the match winner, Oduor.

He added: "Clarke Oduor, absolutely brilliant player. I'll be honest with you, I were crying. At first I thought, Brentford goal went in, I was like, 'Right, that's it. Turn the telly off, I'm going to bed. Don't talk to me for a week.'

"Then we just got on with it and Clarke Oduor got that goal and I just started crying. I was running about, I was like, 'This is my team and I'll never let them get out of my heart.'

"But I'm really overwhelmed that we've done it and I take my hat off the The Reds."

Humberside Police say officers "will issue fines where we need to" if people breach new rules around the use of face coverings in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

The use of face coverings will be compulsory in shops across England from Friday and those who fail to comply with the new rules will face a fine of up to £100, the government has announced.

Assistant Ch Con Chris Noble said: "Guidance we have offered to our local businesses is in a similar vein to our policing approach, which has always been to engage with people and explain, providing encouragement to adhere to the rules and as a last resort, apply enforcement.

“If an individual refuses to comply, shop employees should ask them to leave the store in the first instance. Should there be any further refusal or non-compliance, we are able to attend and whilst we will also attempt to engage with the individual, we can and will issue fines where we need to."

However, he urged people not to immediately contact police if someone is not wearing a face covering, but instead to report it to the shop or premises in question.

"As our investigation progresses, I’d encourage anyone with information which could assist us to get in touch, particularly if they have CCTV or dash camera footage from this time frame."

An Army bomb disposal truck has been rescued from the incoming tide by a "hero" farmer after getting stuck in mud on an East Yorkshire beach.

    Tractor pulls truck

Soldiers had been carrying out controlled explosions on munitions from an old RAF base on the beach at the village of Mappleton yesterday, when their vehicle got stuck.

Luckily, a local farmer was able to offer a tow - watched in amusement by troops and members of the public.

An Army spokesperson said: “Historically, Cowden Bombing Range, situated above Mappleton Beach, was used as an RAF training facility for over 50 years.

"A bomb disposal team from 21 Field Squadron deployed to clear the beach in order to make it safe for public use.

"Huge thanks go to our local hero today, a neighbouring farmer who assisted in the recovery of one of our vehicles."
