  16. 'Too soon' to ease lockdown in Bradford - council leaderpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 30 July 2020

The leader of Bradford Council says it is "too soon" for the city to implement a proposed further easing of lockdown measures after a rise in the the number of cases of coronavirus.

    Bradford

Infection rates in the city rose from 42 per 100,000 population in the week ending 18 July to 48 in the week ending 25 July.

The council says the recent rise means the city is now "an outlier on the Government’s watch list" and brings a "real concern" that any further rise could result in a local lockdown.

As a result the authority says it is talking with the government as to whether to implement any further local easing of restrictions set to to take place on 1 August, including keeping venues like bowling alleys, boxing gyms and some other sports sites closed.

Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: "To avoid a local lockdown we need to do something now so, personally, I would think that 1 August let's just pause the easing of those restrictions and make sure we consolidate what we are doing.

"We need to make sure people realise that they need to get tested if they have symptoms, don't shake hands etc, get all those messages really clearly in people's minds and take it from there.

"But certainly I think 1 August is probably too soon to go to further easing of lockdown."
