Civic leaders and the hospitality sector in Leeds are calling on the government to urgently review coronavirus restrictions - in particular those requiring venues to close at 22:00.

In a joint letter issued to the Prime Minister today, Council leader Judith Blake and chief executive Tom Riordan have united with bars and restaurants to highlight the impact the curfew is having on the city’s economy.

The letter opens with: "We write to you today as a collective of leaders from the public sector and hospitality businesses representing the city of Leeds.

"Together, we implore you and your colleagues to urgently review the current Covid-19 restrictions in place, which are wreaking a devastating and, we fear, irrevocable toll on our city and its economy."

Councillor Blake says the "tenacity and innovation" local businesses in the hospitality sector have shown during the pandemic has been "inspiring".

She says: "The current curfew is making this fight for survival an even harder one to win and in some cases it is sadly proving impossible, with many businesses and jobs across our city now in serious jeopardy.

"We hope the government acknowledges its importance to the future of our economy and public finances by changing these restrictions.”

Police officers were injured after they were targeted by groups throwing fireworks last November.

A newborn dik-dik, a kind of tiny antelope, has been welcomed by the public at a wildlife park in Yorkshire.

Mr Pistachio was born at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on 26 August after a family of dik-diks was brought to the Doncaster attraction earlier this year.

His mum, Davos and Crissy, and his seven-month-old brother Mr Cashew, arrived at the park as part of a global conservation project.

Normally growing just 16ins (41cm) tall, they usually live in eastern Africa.

Hoofstock team leader Ayshea Seaton said: “He is so cute that people, and animals, stop in their tracks to look at him.

“He is the latest addition to the family, and everyone is very proud that they are thriving so well here.”

A murder investigation has begun following the death of a man in the Peel Street area of Hull last night, say police.

The man was found in the street with stab wounds at about 20:10 yesterday evening. He was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.

A number of arrests were made last night in connection to the incident, Humberside Police said.

Det Ch Insp Bob Clark said: “Following leads and analysis already carried out we believe this was an isolated incident with no wider threat or risk to the general public.

“There was a large group of individuals in the area, which tragically resulted in one man suffering fatal stab wounds.

“The circumstances of the incident and the events leading up to it will be fully established as part of the investigation, with officers working through CCTV footage, house to house inquiries and taking witness statements."

A police scene remains in place with additional police patrols present in the area.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is being urged to contact police.

There have been 10 positive Covid-19 tests across five clubs in Super League from the latest round of testing.

A man's been treated for head injuries after being attacked by a group of four men in Sheffield, police say.

The 26-year-old was on Eldon Street, near Devonshire Green, at about 22:30 on Saturday, 3 October when he was attacked by a group of men, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Det Con Nicola Cooper said: "This was a nasty attack on a young man in a popular part of the city centre.

"From CCTV inquiries we have identified the attackers to be a group of four men who are unknown to the victim.

"We know there were other people in the area at the time, so if you can help our investigation with any information, I’d urge you to do so," she added.

A West Yorkshire biscuit factory has been sold to the giant Italian Nutella and Kinder chocolate firm Ferrero as part of a £246m deal.

The Italian confectioner has agreed to buy Fox's Biscuits from food manufacturer 2 Sisters Food Group, including the biscuit factory in Batley.

Fox's Biscuits is one of Britain's best-known biscuit brands, making household names such as Rocky Bars, Party Rings, Crunch Creams and Crinkle Creams.

The Fox's Biscuits factory in Batley was saved from closure in July 2011.

The deal - which is set to complete within months - marks Ferrero's second biscuit firm takeover in the past year, coming after it bought Royal Dansk firm Kelsen last September.

Craven is expected to be named an "area of concern" as North Yorkshire faces a "tipping point" in its battle against coronavirus, council bosses say.

Richard Flinton, chief executive of North Yorkshire County Council, said the infection rate across the county is continuing to rise, with latest figures showing it to be at 91.1 per 100,000 - just short of the England seven-day average of 93.2.

However, Mr Flinton said the rate in Craven, particularly around the Skipton and south Craven border, is 136.5.

He said: "We suspect the continued and worrying rise in cases in this area will result in the district going onto the government’s watch list as an area of concern."

Public health officials were dealing with 125 outbreaks across the county in places including schools, care homes and workplaces, he added.

Calling on residents to "redouble their efforts" in the fight against the virus, Mr Flinton said the next few days would be "critical".

"We stand at a tipping point and only by playing our part as individuals in a concerted effort will we be able to step back from this precipice," he said.

Scarborough and Selby were named as areas of concern last month, though Mr Flinton said the two areas were "no longer seeing the highest level of spread".

A man's died after being involved in a two-vehicle collision in North Yorkshire, it's been confirmed.

The crash, involving a white Audi A4 and a black Peugeot, happened on the A19 at South Kilvington at about 05:30 this morning, say police.

The man who was driving the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Audi was uninjured.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "The road is likely to be closed until around midday.

"Anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information about the collision, including any dash-cam footage, should contact us," he added.

Motorists are being advised to use alternative routes for the time being.

Police are urging anyone who can help officers locate a man who's been missing from Bradford for 18 weeks to get in touch.

Ismail Ali (pictured), 46, was last seen in Gulams food shop in Cumberland Road on 29 May.

He's described as a slim Asian male, with short black hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing a red hooded top, black trousers and dark footwear.

It's thought Mr Ali has links to the Dewsbury and Batley areas, as well as links to Blackburn.

Officers say they are "very concerned" for his welfare and are urging people to get in touch if they have any further information.

The incident took place at about 11:40 Tuesday 22 September when a man boarded a train, took property from the luggage rack and then left the train.

It's believed the theft is is linked to a number of similar offences in the Yorkshire area.

Officers say they would like to speak to the man in the images in connection with the incident.

A permanent coronavirus testing centre for the winter is to be built in Harrogate.

The testing site at the Dragon Road car park is being built in response to the recent rise in virus infections.

A mobile testing facility has been operating from the car park but the site is being upgraded as testing efforts are ramped up.

Richard Webb, director of adult social care at North Yorkshire County Council, said the county had retained good testing capacity and that it will lobby the government for more.

He told the briefing: “We have been fortunate to retain our testing capacity when other parts of Yorkshire have seen it stretched.”

Construction of the site will begin on 15 October. The testing facility is expected to open a week later.

Rail passengers are being warned of delays of up to 30 minutes on trains between Sheffield and Manchester as a result of flooding.

A man has died following an attack in a street in Hull.

Police were called to Peel Street at about 20:00 on Wednesday after reports that a man had suffered serious injuries in an assault.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but later died. His family have been informed, Humberside Police said.

A number of people have been arrested and remain in custody while inquiries into the circumstances of the attack continue, the force added.

Det Supt Simon Gawthorpe said: "We believe there to have been a large group of people in the area at the time of the assault and are urging witnesses, or anyone with information which might help our investigations, to get in touch."

Two venues will be used for the UK Snooker Championship this year to comply with government Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

The qualifiers and first round will be staged at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes next month with the second round onwards at the York Barbican as usual.

It is not known yet whether spectators will be allowed to attend.

The arrangements were outlined as the World Snooker Tour (WST) announced its schedule for the season.

Snooker competitions have been held behind closed doors in recent months at the Milton Keynes venue, which is equipped to deal with the larger number of players in early-round matches.

The UK Championship first round will take place there from 23 to 26 November, with the second round onwards in York from 28 November to 6 December.

WST chairman Barry Hearn, who has been in isolation with coronavirus, said: "In these difficult times we are working relentlessly to keep our tour going.

"We will continue to explore all avenues in terms of staging events and providing access for live fans, while keeping health and safety as our top priority."
