The pipeline, running between Goxhill in North Lincolnshire and Paull in East Yorkshire, has been officially named the world’s longest hydraulically inserted pipeline at 4.96km in length, external.

In July, after the successful completion of the tunnel beneath the Humber Estuary, it was flooded and the pipe was pushed through.

Once the pipeline had been inserted, it was verified by the Guinness Book of Records.

Emma Ford, head of gas construction for National Grid, says: "Delivering a project which is of such importance for the gas transmission network is a super achievement.

"To achieve a world record is the 'icing on the cake'."

The pipeline is now being connected to the network, ready for gas to begin flowing in December, securing the supply of up to 25% of Britain’s gas during the winter months, according to National Grid.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) cited almost 3,000 examples of raw sewage pollution in English and Welsh waters over 12 months, including 96 reported incidents of sewage being spilt into Scaborough's North and South Bay.

Scarborough surfer Steve Crawford said: "I've surfed with chip dye giving me fake tan and gobs of grease smearing my board.

"It's the 21st Century, we've fought for over 30 years and we'll keep fighting until industry and government realise that the sea is not a dump."

Hugo Tagholm, SAS chief executive, said: "This report demonstrates rivers and oceans are being treated like open sewers as combined sewer overflows are used as a routine method for disposing of sewage."

He called for investment in infrastructure to end the use of such emergency sewage overflows.

Yorkshire Water said it was "investing in innovative technologies" to improve bathing water quality.

    CSI Van

Two men, aged 18 and 48, and a 14-year-old male, remain in custody after being arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in connection with incidents in Halton Moor, according to the West Yorkshire force.

At about 19:30 last night, police vans were targeted with bricks and fireworks when a large crowd gathered around the junction of Rathmell Road and Ullswater Crescent, police say.

At about 21:30, a car was set on fire in Kendal Drive and public order units were sent to the area to disperse a crowd and support fire crews.

Shortly before 23:00 a garden fence at a house in Rathmell Road was set on fire and officers were again deployed to support fire service colleagues at the scene, the force says.

This followed incidents on Saturday evening where a large group of youths caused damage to a car and a house in Kendal Drive.

Objects were thrown at officers and vehicles, resulting in two officers being hit but not injured and three vehicles damaged, according to police.

Ch Supt Damien Miller says: "The behaviour witnessed in this part of Halton Moor over the weekend was truly disgraceful, and I know the majority of the community will be as appalled as we are about what occurred.

“We recognise the understandable concern these incidents will have caused to people living there, and officers will be maintaining a visible presence in the area over the coming days to reassure the community."

Anyone who has information which may be useful to the police investigation is being asked to get in touch, Ch Supt Miller adds.

A 19-year-old man arrested in connection with a Bonfire Night arson attack which destroyed a family home in Hull and killed three pets has been released under investigation, police say.

    Arson attack scene

Officers are now appealing for witnesses, or anyone with video footage from the area at around the time of the blaze, to get in touch.

Det Con Ross Paterson, leading the investigation, says: "This was a really serious incident, which could easily have cost someone their life.

"As it is, a family has been left without a home and a number of animals were sadly killed in the fire.

"We have already been out tracing any CCTV which may have captured the incident and are also keen to speak to anyone who was filming in the area or may have dashcam footage."

You may have noticed fog - and plenty of it - across the Yorkshire and Humber region over the last few days.

You've been sending us some fantastic pictures from across our region showing just how widespread this blanket of fog has been.

The pictures below show Sheffield, Ampleforth and Keighley:

Why has there been so much fog recently?

BBC weather presenter Jen Bartram explains this is something called "radiation fog", which is common at this time of year.

She says: "This is fog that forms during clear nights with light winds. Basically, the ground heats up during the day. At night, that heat radiates away, cooling both the ground and the air around it.

"Cooler air can’t hold as much moisture as warmer air, so water vapour condenses and forms mist or fog.

"Last week, high pressure across Yorkshire gave relatively clear skies and light winds – so perfect conditions for fog to form."

  11. Hydrogen plant proposal for Saltend chemicals parkpublished at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2020

A power station in Hull plans to switch from using fossil fuels in favour of hydrogen.

    Power station

The gas-fired plant at Saltend is planning the change as part of a bigger project across the Humber estuary to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.

Geoff Holmes, the chief executive of Px Group, says: "Hydrogen is a much cleaner fuel to burn in generating electricity and that's why we're moving to a lower carbon footprint for the power station and the entire chemicals park.

"As well as creating new hydrogen we're also creating a facility to take all of the discharge gases and store them safely in an unused reservoir offshore."
