Several days of delays were caused after the cement-carrying train derailed with some wagons tipping over on Wednesday 11 November.

Some of the cement was spilled onto the track, a report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch says.

The report found "a series of rail fastenings, intended to maintain the correct distance between the rails, had broken".

It added that initial evidence suggested some of these were already broken before the derailment.

"Consequently, as the freight train passed, the rails moved apart and some of the wagons’ wheels dropped into the space between the rails," the report said.

Further investigation work is ongoing, it added.
