The report says there has been "significant variation in academic progress" during the lockdowns in the city.

Living conditions, parents’ jobs and a lack of devices, wi-fi and data can all affect home schooling, it adds.

And it warns that the education, exam grades and career prospects of a generation of children in Sheffield could be damaged unless they get extra support.

Eleanor Rutter, consultant in public health for Sheffield City Council, says in the report: "Children in homes of high occupancy or housing in poor condition are likely to have moved substantially backwards.

"Children who have parents with additional needs are also at risk of falling behind in their education as their parents may struggle to help teach the subject.

"And children of parents who have jobs with long hours or shifts may also receive less support as a result of parents needing to work and may be disproportionately negatively affected."

Pupils who were already struggling to engage in full-time schooling are also likely to have fallen behind in their education, the report says.

Cyber criminals piggy-backing on the NHS roll out of the Covid-19 vaccination programme are "trying to steal from the vulnerable," according to Bradford Council.

In a statement the council said: "There have been reports of a new scam where a person receives a text message saying they need to book a vaccination appointment.

"Clicking the link in the message takes the victim to a fake NHS form which asks for their bank details, and or credit/debit card number to prove their identity.

"Anyone who receives the text message should delete it immediately."

Councillor Abdul Jabar said: “What makes this latest scam so despicable is that it's specifically targeting elderly and vulnerable people.

“These are the groups most likely to be in line for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccination and more likely to fall prey to these types of scams."

He added: "Be assured, the NHS won’t ask for people’s credit/debit card number or banking information. If they are contacting you they will already have all the information they need."

  19. York hospital doctor says staff 'are sinking'published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A hospital doctor has pleaded for people to stick to lockdown rules as medical staff "are sinking" under the pressure of treating an increasing number of patients.

    Dr Sarah AddisImage source, LDRS

Dr Sarah Addis, who works in A&E at York Hospital, posted her message on social media.

She said: "It's brutal and we are sinking. Quite simply we are being overrun. And we are starting to see younger and sicker Covid patients."

Dr Addis said ambulances were queuing at the hospital, which had become so busy that social distancing was difficult and she feared patients in need of emergency care would be affected.

"We have no more scope to cope either in terms of staff resilience or plan B. We do not have elastic walls - we have no more room at the inn," she said.

And she revealed the personal toll the pressure was taking on staff, saying some patients who came to A&E could be abusive and argue about being asked to wear face masks.

"It's demoralising and exhausting," she said. "It makes me question if I even want to stay in medicine any more. I question my faith in humanity."

York Hospital said the trust was introducing plans to "release additional beds and staff".
