    Rainfall in Doncaster due to Storm Christoph has had less impact than was expected, the boss of the town's council has said.

    Damian Allen, chief executive of Doncaster Council, said: "Because we had notice on Sunday, we worked on a plan to mobilise sandbags.

    “Every day we've had 250 to 300 people out and about, as well as a lot volunteers, to help us prepare temporary defences.”

    He added: “We were pleased the Met Office gave us an earlier warning, that wasn't the case in 2019 and therefore we didn't have the opportunity to prepare.

    “The rain predicted from 06:00 just hasn't materialised in the same way, it's been surges of rain, and it has deferred the impact.”

    A total of 61 flood warnings, external - meaning immediate action should be taken as flooding is expected - remain in place in Yorkshire.

    There are also 49 flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible, be prepared - in place on the county's rivers.

    A murder investigation's been launched following the discovery of the body of a teenage boy in Hull earlier this week.

    The body of 17-year-old Connor Lyons was found on the bank of the River Hull in Ennerdale on Tuesday.

    His death is being treated as murder, Humberside Police has confirmed.

    One man is currently in custody while another is assisting officers with their inquiries, the force added.

    A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "We are supporting his family at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with Mr Lyons' loved ones.

    The River Ouse at Cawood in North Yorkshire has overtopped its banks and flooded the nearby Kelfield Ings.

    The B1222 between the villages of Cawood and Stillingfleet has been closed as a result.

    Cawood Bridge, one of only three road crossings over the Ouse which carries the B1222 over the river, has been closed since Wednesday.

    The River Ouse in Cawood is currently about 7.8m above its usual level (see water level table below) and is expected to peak at 8.2m later this evening, according to the Environment Agency:

    An appeal's been launched following the death of a buzzard found with two pieces of lead shot in its body near York.

    A member of the public found the injured bird close to Askham Park on 12 December 2020, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The female bird appeared to be injured and was unable to fly so an RSPCA Inspector took the bird to a local vet where it subsequently died, police said.

    X-rays revealed the lead shot in the buzzard's body, officers added.

    Birds of prey are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, with offenders facing up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to £5,000.

    Anyone with any information about the incident is being urged to contact police.

    No further flooding issues are expected in West Yorkshire folowing heavy rain brought in by Storm Christoph, the Environment Agency (EA) has said.

    Adrian Gil, EA area flood risk manager, said: "We do still have some high river levels around and that may still trigger some flood warnings as that water moves down, but we're not expecting any issues at the moment."

    He continued: "We've not had any confirmed reports of any properties flooding.

    "Without question, some of our flood defences will have protected some people, but I suspect we've seen river levels that were lower than what was forecast."

    Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the government is "totally prepared" for the dual crises of flooding and the pandemic and Covid-secure facilities would be available for any people forced to evacuate as a result of the weather.

    An amber "be prepared" Met Office heavy rain warning has ended, , externalbut a yellow "be aware" warning has been issued for ice in Yorkshire, external.

    The River Ouse in York is expected to peak in the early hours of Friday.

    Hospitality Association York (HAY) said two thirds of the city’s chain hotels were still open, with the room occupation rate currently at about 11%.

    Hotels can stay open during the coronavirus lockdown but only for guests with a legally allowed , externalreason, including stays for work or education.

    Martin Bradnam, chair of HAY, said: “There would be a desire to work quickly and closely with the council if the flooding does get worse and there’s a need to evacuate.

    “Hotels would be able to react to the need and certainly there’s bed space, so it wouldn’t be a problem.”

    Dozens of properties are at risk of flooding and more than 40 flood warnings are in place as Storm Christoph causes disruption across North Yorkshire.

    In York, up to 95 properties in the Strensall to Yearsley Baths area could be hit by rising water from the River Foss, according to City of York Council.

    Any flooding is expected to affect gardens and outbuildings rather than entering homes, the council said.

    Council officers are going door to door to hand out sandbags and urge residents to deploy flood defences.

    City of York Councillor, Paula Widdowson, said; "The Environment Agency said the river will rise to more than 4m above its normal level. We're safe until it goes over 5m.

    "All the flood barriers and all the pumps have been deployed to make sure they're ready to go should they need to."

    This is the scene on the River Aire in Castleford this morning following heavy rain overnight brought in by Storm Christoph.

    The river has overtopped its banks near Boundary Bridge and Barnsdale Road has been closed due to flooding and a flood warning remains in place, external for the river in that area.

    The Environment Agency says it's "monitoring the situation closely".

    "We've got an improving picture for many communities across Yorkshire, particularly in West Yorkshire.

    "We're seeing levels now drop on the Upper Calder Valley and we'll see a number of the flood warnings come off today," he adds.

    People in York are being warned to stay away from the River Ouse in the city as water levels continue to rise following heavy rain brought by Storm Christoph.

    The Environment Agency says it expects the river to peak at between 4.4m and 4.8m above normal levels later this evening. The River Foss flood barrier in the city is in operation and flood gates are closed.

    The York Central MP Rachael Maskell says: "We know some properties will flood, particularly along the riverside. For some businesses it'll be about the fourth time in a year."

    "It's flowing incredibly fast and is very cold - please keep away and let people from the council do their work to keep the city safe."

    Flood sirens were used in Walsden earlier to warn people of the possibility of flooding.

    In Mytholmroyd, flood defences have helped reduce the risk of flooding in the town so far.

    However, it will be a long night for some people in the Calder Valley as rain continues to fall, according to one councillor.

    There are almost 20 flood alerts currently in place for South Yorkshire as rain continues to fall across the region.

    In Doncaster, the River Don is expected to peak in the next couple of hours, with residents in Bentley saying they're "preparing for the worst, hoping for the best".

    There are no flood warnings - a more severe type of warning that requires people to take action - in the region currently, according to the Environment Agency's website.

    However, flooding on the railway line stopped trains from calling at Rotherham station earlier (below).

    There are flood alerts for Blackburn Brook in Sheffield, parts of the River Don catchment and the River Dearne.

    A family whose home was flooded in February 2020 have spoken about their anxiety following heavy rain across Yorkshire.

    Neil and Laura McDonald, from Walsden, moved out of their house after it was flooded and only returned in November.

    Neil McDonald said: “This is our first risk since we’ve been back in the house.”

    The family have installed a temporary flood barrier by their front door and added a “flood membrane” to the property in preparation.

    Mrs McDonald said: “We've put ourselves in a really good position moving forward to not flood.”

    On Tuesday night, sirens sounded in Walsden to warn people of possible flooding.

    However Keith Crabtree, lead flood warden in nearby Todmorden, said the situation today had been better than expected.

    People who were hit by flooding in November 2019 say they're "devastated" having to wait to find out if they'll be flooded again following heavy rain.

    The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for rain into tomorrow as part of Storm Christoph.

    On Yarborough Terrace in Bentley, Doncaster, many residents were flooded when the nearby River Don overtopped in 2019.

    Hannah Booth, who lives on the road, said community spirit helped them rebuild after the flooding last time when she lost "everything".

    She lived in a caravan on the drive for six months while her house was repaired.

    She said: "I've got not words to be honest because I'm absolutely devastated but we've just got to do it as a community.

    "We've got to pull together and muck in and crack on. We can't do anything else. We can't stop the weather, we can't stop the flooding, there's nothing else we can do."
