  1. Bridlington lobster firm blames closure on Brexit rulespublished at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

Baron Shellfish, which employs three people in Bridlington said it would need to hire two more staff to do the extra paperwork required.

Owner Sam Baron said it meant the business was no longer viable.

The government said it recognised there were issues and was working with the industry to resolve them.

New regulations came into force on 1 January regarding live exports to the European Union, with a requirement for extra checks and documentation.

Mr Baron, who set up the firm with his father 40 years ago, said he had weathered the coronavirus pandemic and still had a loyal customer base in places like Spain and France.

However, he said the new regulations were "the final straw".

In a statement, a government spokesperson said: "We recognise the temporary issues the fishing industry is facing.

"We are working closely with fishing industry representatives right across the UK, and the authorities in EU Member States, to ensure that goods can continue to flow smoothly to market."

  2. Leeds Bradford Airport expansion: Open letter opposes planpublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

Plans to expand Leeds Bradford Airport must be halted "for the good of generations", a group of MPs, councillors and scientists has urged.

Plans to demolish the terminal and build a new one costing up to £150m have been recommended for approval.

An open letter signed by 114 people says plans to increase the airport's size and passenger numbers is "fundamentally wrong".

Labour MPs from four out of five Leeds constituencies - Hilary Benn, Alex Sobel, Richard Burgon, Fabian Hamilton - and Bradford East MP Imran Husain have signed the letter.

They tell the 13 councillors who will make the decision: "Expansion would mean health-damaging increases in noise, traffic and air pollution for thousands of people in our local communities.

"Above all, it would mean a huge increase in greenhouse gas emissions exactly when we need to cut them to prevent the worst effects of the climate crisis. Expansion would be fundamentally wrong."

In July 2020, a group of climate scientists said the expanded airport's greenhouse gas emissions would be higher than those allowed for the whole of Leeds in 10 years' time.

The airport has been approached for a response to the letter.

Leeds City Council is due to make a final decision tomorrow.

Councillors have agreed to grant an environmental permit for a company to operate a controversial waste incinerator in Calderdale.

The Sowerby Bridge plant, operated by Calder Valley Skip Hire Ltd, was refused by the council in 2017 but the decision was overturned by the Planning Inspectorate a year ago.

Three councillors from nearby wards had argued against allowing the permit because of concerns about the impact on wildlife and air quality, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Cabinet members appeared unhappy about granting the permit but said the conditions of it meant that if the incinerator gave rise to pollution that would risk public health, it would be grounds for work there to stop.

Coun Scott Patient, cabinet member for climate change and resilience, said government needed to change tack on incinerators.

“Our hands are tied in a way.

“Collectively we need to change our ways and government needs to change legislation for things like incinerators going forward."

Plans for the incinerator, at Belmont Industrial Estate, have proved controversial in the past, with more than 1,500 people signing a petition against it.

Steve Flatley, from the council, added: “There’s been a concerning tripling of youth unemployment.

“There are further challenges to those young people who wish to go into the labour market aged 18 because of the situation with the local economy and how it’s been impacted by the pandemic.”

Wendy Mangan from the Department for Work and Pensions said the government has made it a priority to get young people back into work and the Kickstart scheme – providing paid six-month job placements for unemployed 16 to 24 year olds – has created jobs in LNER, Portakabin, Aviva and others.

But council economy boss, Simon Brereton, said a report by Centre for Cities think tank shows York has seen the smallest increase in unemployment.

He added: “The fact every other city is doing worse is there, but doesn’t make any difference to those who’ve lost their job, who we all very much feel for and we’re working very hard with, to make sure they can find alternative employment.”
