According to the Kirklees Council report, some traders may also be offered a new home inside vacant shops in the town, although the majority of stallholders will be relocated to town centre streets between Corporation Street and Market Place.

The move's expected to cost £2.3m and council bosses also plan on spending another £15m to revamp the market, saying they want it to be "a major draw" which can be a "unique asset".

But the number of stalls available at the market is expected to fall from 400 to 200 as part of the changes which are due to be introduced from March 2022.

Dewsbury Market was named England’s best open air market in 2007, but has since suffered decline despite a £2.7m overhaul during 2010.

  5. Rise in illegal dog breeders in lockdown, council warnspublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2021

There's been a rise in unlicensed dog breeders during lockdown, with some puppies dying at home after being bought from unknown sellers on the side of the road, a South Yorkshire Council has warned.

    Puppy

More people buying dogs throughout the coronavirus pandemic has led to higher prices and more unlicensed dog sales, according to Doncaster Council.

The authority said "so many" of the unlicensed breeders also mistreat the animals and in some cases puppies have died after being bought from an unknown seller.

All licensed breeders should display their licence number and council name on adverts, the council added.

They should also provide documentation at the point of sale including health certificates, vet report and records, insurance, microchip documentation and a vaccination card.

Licensed breeders' dogs are inspected by a vet and the council every one to three years.

Doncaster Council says it has a list of legitimate breeders, external for the area, and The Dogs Trust has a list of things to consider, external when buying a dog.

Councillor Chris McGuinness said: “It’s easy to get carried away when buying a puppy, but I would urge people to think with their head and not their heart.

“We're doing what we can to stop illegal breeders and the mistreatment of pets, but we need people to help by being vigilant."

Two friends from West Yorkshire have told BBC Radio Leeds that the gradual relaxation of coronavirus restrictions can't come soon enough after personal tragedy struck during the pandemic.

The latest government rules now state that one person can sit outside with a friend for recreation, which can include "coffee on a bench".

As a result of the easing of restrictions, Richard and Debbie decided to meet at Pugney's Country Park in Wakefield after not seeing each other for several months.

Richard, who's from Dewsbury, says: "I'm recovering from Covid, I got it over Christmas.

"I was hospitalised with it and I lost my husband to Covid as well. It's just nice to have someone with me."

Debbie says: "I just wish I could give him a cuddle...but I'm here now."

The six marshals, who patrol and advise about Covid-19 safety, have so far collected 1,062 discarded face masks since they started work in December.

They've also handed out face coverings and hand sanitiser to 161 people, according to City of York Council.

Meanwhile, the marshals have spoken to over 1,000 groups of people and advised 775 businesses on infection control measures, licensing, grants and other matters.

Their contracts have now been extended so they can stay in the city to encourage safety during re-opening, the council says.

They were originally employed from December to March, funded by a pot set aside for recovery from the pandemic, but will now stay until September, to cover the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Councillor Andrew Waller, from City of York Council, said the marshals will help Covid-19 rates keep dropping in York so will also help the city's economic recovery "especially with new variants emerging".

  12. Challenge Cup: BBC to show Featherstone v Bradfordpublished at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2021

    BBC Sport

The Challenge Cup first round ties between Featherstone Rovers v Bradford Bulls and West Wales Raiders v Widnes Vikings will be shown live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport digital platforms.

For all four teams the games mark a return to action after more than a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ties are scheduled for Sunday 21 March.

The Raiders v Vikings tie kicks off at 12:45, with Rovers v Bulls following at 15:00.

The ongoing implications of the pandemic have forced changes to the structure of the 2021 Challenge Cup because amateur clubs were not able to enter the tournament for the early rounds.

Instead, the 13 English clubs from the Championship - including Bradford, Featherstone and Widnes - have been joined by West Wales and two other clubs from League One.

The 12 Super League clubs will join the competition at the third-round stage in April, which will be followed by quarter-finals in May, the semi-finals on 5 June, and the final at Wembley on Saturday, 17 July - with the BBC showing two third-round fixtures, two quarter-finals, the semi-final and final.

Last year's final saw Leeds Rhinos beat Salford Red Devils 17-16 at Wembley thanks to a late drop-goal from Luke Gale.

The temporary 500-bed site at the North Yorkshire spa town's convention centre will close next month.

Critics have said it was in the wrong location, while others have said it served a useful purpose treating some non-Covid patients.

The NHS has described the hospitals as the "ultimate insurance policy".

It set up the network of Nightingale hospitals to cope with a surge in coronavirus cases during the pandemic, but they were not widely used.

In response to a Parliamentary question, external. the government said its own estimates published in September 2020 had found that setting up the temporary hospital in Harrogate had cost £27.3m.

Despite being in North Yorkshire, the hospital has been administered by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since it opened last April.

Spending reports published by the trust, external and analysed by BBC Yorkshire reveal that, between September and December 2020, a further £2m was spent on equipment, medical supplies and paying contractors for the upkeep of the facility.

Social care bosses at Doncaster Council say a "growing number of children" show signs of mental health issues, with "high numbers" taken to A&E having self-harmed or attempted suicide.

As a result the authority plans to hire six specialist social workers to help children, paid for by £226,000 from the authority’s Covid-19 Pressures Fund.

The fund will be used for temporary additional roles to support vulnerable children and young people, many of whom have social, emotional and mental health needs.

The council says the coronavirus pandemic has "simultaneously increased the strain on families" while also reducing schools' ability to intervene early when problems develop.

Alison Tomes, from the council's children and young people department, says it is a national issue and locally is being reported from schools, mental health services and through high numbers of children at A&E.

Children and young people already in vulnerable situations are more at risk, she adds.

“The number of families open to early help has steadily reduced over the last two years...A number of pressures relating to the delivery of the early help offer have emerged which has necessitated a review of current processes and procedures," she says.

Doncaster Council says the extra Early Help Officers mean educational settings can be better supported.

More information and support for children and young people can be found via the BBC Action Line.
