A total of 50 fixed penalty notices were issued in Scarborough last week, almost half the 102 issued across the whole county.

Two large gatherings in Scarborough racked up a combined £16,000 in fines as police were called to a number of parties, according to the North Yorkshire force.

Supt Mike Walker said: "It's imperative we maintain the collective effort to reduce the infection rate as low as possible while the vaccination programme is rolled out across the population.

"We must keep going and not allow all the hard work and sacrifice to be undone through complacency.

“We must all keep adhering to regulations around travel and gatherings, maintaining social distance, wearing face coverings in shops and on public transport and keeping our hands as clean as possible."

Supt Walker also warned: "Everyone can expect to see an increased policing presence as we work alongside our partners to help keep the virus at bay in the weeks and months ahead."

Offenders will be automatically tagged for up to 12 months after being released from prison under a Ministry of Justice (MoJ) pilot.

Humberside Police is one of six police forces taking part in the scheme.

The MoJ said tracking offenders 24 hours a day would act as a deterrent.

It estimated 250 offenders, who have served a year in prison, will be fitted with the tag in the first six months of the scheme as part of their licence conditions.

Police will be able to cross-reference the GPS data with reports of new thefts, robberies and burglaries to see if offenders were in the area at the time.

  7. Claudia Lawrence: New appeal on eve of 12 year anniversarypublished at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

A fresh appeal for answers about missing Claudia Lawrence has been made on the eve of the anniversary of her disappearance.

Claudia LawrenceImage source, North Yorkshire Police

The chef, 35, failed to arrive for work at York University on 18 March 2009. Police believe she was murdered despite her body never being found.

Her father Peter Lawrence, 74, died last month without finding out what had happened to his daughter.

His friend Martin Dales said there were people "at large" who had information.

No-one has heard from Ms Lawrence since she called her mother, Joan, on the evening of 17 March 2009.

She failed to arrive for her job at Goodricke College the following day and was reported missing by her father.

Detectives have previously said they "strongly suspect key and vital information" which would offer a breakthrough was being "withheld" and that the answer to her disappearance lies "locally".

Mr Dales said: "Despite the efforts of Claudia's late father, family, friends and police, there are still no answers and it is tragic Peter died not knowing what has happened to her.

"More to the point, in the light of there being no one brought to justice in the 12 years, there are still people 'at large' in York, or maybe somewhere else now, who know what happened to Claudia and potentially remain a threat to the communities in which they live."

The operation at an industrial lock-up close to the Wicker on Monday took place following information about organised criminal activity, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Det Con Mike Jenkins said: “As well as a significant quantity of drugs, we recovered cash which was hidden away in the premises.

“The vehicles we recovered are all believed to have been stolen in incidents across the north of England, so this is a really good result for our team and the public.

“While no-one was at the premises at the time, we are now carrying out inquiries to identify a number of people we want to speak to."

Officers received reports of vehicles taking part in "drag racing" on Kings Road in Cleethorpes on Sunday, as well as drivers sounding their horns continuously and disrupting other vehicles.

The area is covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order, which aims to protect local residents from those intending to cause nuisance or harm.

One of the drivers involved had his vehicle seized while the other two drivers were issued with Section 59 notices, meaning if they're caught again their vehicles will be seized.

PC Dave Cave, from Humberside Police, said: "We understand the detrimental effect anti-social behaviour and nuisance vehicles can have on the community, which is why we’re dedicated to disrupting those involved and working with our partners on longer term solutions to problems."

  15. Petition to keep Lincolnshire street lights on at nightpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Nearly 4,000 people have signed a petition calling for street lights in Lincolnshire to be kept on all night in Lincolnshire following the death of Sarah Everard in London.

    Street light

In 2016, Lincolnshire County Council turned off more than half of its 68,000 street lights in a bid to save £1.7m.

Now, campaigners are urging the authority to reverse the decision using money from the government's Safer Streets Fund.

Karen Cassar, the county's assistant director for highways, said women’s safety was “about much more than streetlights”.

“I can completely understand why some residents, especially women, might feel concerned for their own safety after Sarah Everard’s tragic disappearance in London," she said.

“I know many women – from Lincolnshire and around the country – who don’t feel safe alone after dark, even where there are streetlights, and also long before midnight which is when some in Lincolnshire are turned off. “

Ms Cassar added that police had said in 2018 they had "found no impact on night-time crime levels as a result of the change".

She said a system that allowed local councils to pay for lights to be kept on all night had only resulted in four lights being changed.

  16. New women's safety plans 'not anything substantial' - PCCpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

    BBC Radio Bradford

New proposals to improve women and girls' safety in the wake of Sarah Everard's death will not address "anything substantial", West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has said.

    cctv camera

Speaking on BBC Radio Bradford, PCC Mark Burns-Williamson said he was "not convinced" by government plans for new funding for CCTV, and a trial of plain-clothes officers in pubs and bars.

He said: "The issue is a wider debate around education, awareness and attitudes and respectful actions - for all men, in particular, but everybody - about how we treat other people."

Mr Burns-Williamson admitted there was a lack of trust in the police in general, but said satisfaction with the police in West Yorkshire specifically had risen in the last 12 months.

Speaking about the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which has now passed its second reading in the Commons, Mr Burns-Williamson said the legislation was "wide-ranging" and some MPs had "quite rightly" raised concerns.

"Police themselves don't really want to be having to police new regulations and interpretations of this pandemic it seems almost every week at the moment," he added.

"We do need to be careful, I think, around introducing new powers that just may not be needed."

  18. Oxford-AstraZeneca jab 'safe' - Lincolnshire health bossespublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2021

The Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is safe and “saves lives”, Lincolnshire's health bosses have said after several European countries stopped administering it over blood clot concerns.

Use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been paused in a number of European countries after a small number of blood clots were reported among people who had recently had the jab.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating the reports, but says there is no evidence that the clots were linked to the vaccine.

The UK's medical regulator also says the jab is safe to give to people.

Lincolnshire County Council’s assistant director for public health, Andy Fox, said the temporary European bans were “mind-boggling”.

"We have proof the vaccine saves lives, that is proven beyond all doubt scientifically. It’s safe and effective and is our way out of this," he said.

"I would encourage everybody, everybody, no matter who they are, if they’re offered the vaccine jump at the chance and go and get vaccinated.”

He added there was “absolutely no evidence of any link with blood clots”.

“It doesn’t take more than a cursory look at the number of cases they are reporting...to see we’re talking about a handful of cases.

“I’m so clear that it is an incorrect decision of these other countries have made to stop the vaccination programme with this vaccine that is safe and effective and it could potentially cost lives, to stop vaccinating people."

The boy was standing on Doncaster Road, outside the Dove Inn, at about 08:00 on Tuesday when the pair approached him, South Yorkshire Police said.

One of the suspects threatened the boy and demanded his mobile phone before snatching it from his hand. He then ran across Doncaster Road and up Waltham Street, officers said.

The other man walked onto Sheffield Road via Taylor Row, police added.

One suspect is described as white, unshaven and about 30 years old. He was wearing a dark jacket and carrying a light grey rucksack. The other is described as white and wearing a parka-style coat with fur around the hood.

PC Rebecca Robinson, said: “Fortunately the boy was not injured, although he was understandably shaken.
