The boy was standing on Doncaster Road, outside the Dove Inn at about 08:00 on Tuesday 16 March when the pair approached him, South Yorkshire Police said.

One of the suspects threatened the boy and demanded his mobile phone before snatching it from his hand. He then ran across Doncaster Road and up Waltham Street, officers said.

The other man walked onto Sheffield Road via Taylor Row, police added.

The other is described as white and wearing a parka-style coat with fur around the hood.

PC Rebecca Robinson said: “Fortunately the boy was not injured, although he was understandably shaken.

“I would like to appeal to anybody who was in the area who might have seen the incident, or who recognises the people in the footage to contact us.”

Kell Bank Church of England Primary School, near Masham, is this year celebrating its 200th anniversary and was rated as "outstanding" in its latest Ofsted report.

But pupil numbers have dwindled over recent years from 45 in 2013 to just six this year and despite efforts to save the school it will now close its doors for good on 31 August.

North Yorkshire County Council revealed the closure plans last October and the move has now been given the final go-ahead.

Stuart Carlton, the council’s director of children and young people’s service, said: “Whenever we have to take forward a proposal for school closure we do so with a heavy heart.

"We know the value of village schools but such low numbers cannot financially sustain a school and can have a negative impact on the social and educational interests of children remaining.

“During the consultation on closure there was generally an acceptance that with only six pupils on roll, the school would not be able to continue.

Two of the current pupils at the school are in year six and will progress to secondary schools when the school closes. The other four pupils will be given places at Masham Church of England Primary School.

  5. Bradford hospital appointment system moves onlinepublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

Outpatient appointments at some of Bradford's hospitals can now be changed or cancelled online or by text message, it's been confirmed.

It follows a move to digital for appointment letters last year.

However, a paper letter is sent to a patient's home address if they do not open the digital version within three days, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says.

The new service gives patients the opportunity to change or cancel their appointment online, or by text message.

A paper copy will always be sent if the patient replies "PRINT" or doesn't open the digital letter.

If the appointment is fewer than six days away, both paper and digital letters will be sent at the same time.

Andrew Mullan, service improvement lead at the NHS Trust, says: “Our Central Patient Booking Service is exceptionally busy and currently receives more than 12,000 calls every month.

“However, with 66% of trust patients now choosing to view their letters online, the option to change or cancel their appointment at any time online or by text is likely to appeal."

  6. Man jailed for Christmas church robbery and damage spreepublished at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

A church burglar has been sentenced to two years in prison after smashing a £15,000 stained glass window, stealing £1,000 and throwing a safe and historical books into a river, police say.

    Lee GrayImage source, Lincolnshire Police

Lee Gray (pictured), 39, smashed a stained glass window, causing £15,000 worth of damage, and disconnected CCTV at St Wulfram's Church in Grantham on Christmas Day 2019, according to Lincolnshire Police.

He stole £1,000 donated to the church, threw the safe in the River Witham and dumped historical books, police said.

Gray, of Apple Tree Close, Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth, admitted burglary when he was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court.

Det Sgt Remy Simon said: "Breaking into a church in the early hours of Christmas Day morning really shocked us.

"It showed a total disregard for the church, the local community and Gray's actions couldn't have been more incompatible with the spirit of the season.

"We welcome this sentence and will continue to protect our communities from those that seek to swindle from our properties and residents in Grantham."

The Mayor of Hornsea, Andrew Eastwood, said visitors risked bringing the efforts and sacrifices of residents “tumbling down” with seaside day trips before coronavirus restrictions ease on 29 March.

He added that although the pandemic and lockdown had had an “awful” effect on the local tourism industry, the consequences of flouting restrictions would be worse.

The mayor’s comments come amid concerns sunny weather this weekend could see lockdown rule-breaking at popular visitor spots.

He said: “My message to people for this weekend is just don’t come, I think it’s silly that people would take that risk."

  10. Furniture for Lincolnshire stuck in Suez Canal tailbackpublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

Dozens of shipping containers with garden furniture destined for Lincolnshire are being held up by a stranded mega-container ship in Egypt's Suez Canal.

The Ever Given, operated by the Taiwanese company Evergreen Marine, is the length of four football pitches and one of the world's biggest container vessels.

The blockage it's causing means huge tailbacks of other ships trying to pass through the Suez Canal.

Boyd Douglas Davies, who runs Lincolnshire-based British Garden Centres, says: "We sell a lot of garden furniture which predominantly comes from the Far East.

"We know there are certainly 30 of our containers stuck in that canal and we actually use Evergreen as one of our shipping firms."

Despite efforts to free the ship, it could take weeks to remove experts say.

  11. North Yorkshire Police warn 'stay home' this weekendpublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

People in North Yorkshire are being warned to stay at home this weekend ahead of coronavirus restrictions being eased on Monday.

    'Stay at home' sign

The next relaxation of rules in England is on 29 March, with more restrictions to be lifted on 12 April and then every five weeks - as long as targets for beating coronavirus are met.

    From Monday:

    • People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the "rule of six", including in private gardens
    • The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible
    • Outdoor sport facilities will reopen, including golf courses and tennis and basketball courts, and formally organised outdoor sports can restart
    • Weddings can take place, attended by up to six people
    'Don't come to Malham' sign

But some people have already relaxed their behaviour meaning several tourist areas have recently become busier, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Ch Insp Rachel Wood said: "People do have a tendency to jump ahead in the road map.

"We've seen this already in the last two weekends, where people have reached 29 March before it's actually arrived and we're anticipating that will happen again and are planning accordingly.

"So, we'll be seeing an increased police presence across the county.

Supt Mike Walker added: “When it is safe to do so, we will welcome visitors to the county again.

“My plea to everyone is to be extremely careful and to keep following the regulations until it is safe to resume a more normal way of living.

"We have come too far and made too many sacrifices for this effort to be wasted now.”

A neighbourhood policing team officer came across ambulance staff treating a 19-year-old man on Brudenell Road, near Royal Park Grove, Hyde Park, at about 17:50 on Thursday.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and he was later discharged, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Det Insp James Entwistle says: "We are continuing to carry out inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"The victim appears to have been attacked in the street by a male who left the scene in a car.

"We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation."

  14. Green graveyard planned for Yorkpublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A new environmentally friendly graveyard could be created in York, if plans submitted for a green burial ground are approved.

Farm gate on Murton WayImage source, Google

Plans include a wildflower meadow and orchard to be created on a field north of Murton Way in Osbaldwick.

Burial space in the area is likely to run out within three years, according to Osbaldwick Parish Council and Murton Parish Council, who have submitted the plans.

Green funerals forbid the marking of a grave site with a memorial or tending to the plot.

Burials take place at a site with a conservation purpose and at a ground which does not look like a graveyard and require a coffin or shroud made from natural materials.

The planned burial ground is currently a nine-acre field north of Murton Way.

Planners say hedgerows would be planted at the ground as soon as possible, as well as oak trees and a wildflower meadow.

Green burials have more rapid rates of decomposition because of the relatively shallow depth of graves, the biodegradability of coffins or shrouds and no use of embalming fluids, according to the Environment Agency.

  19. Struggling Liberty Steel will bounce back - Union reppublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

A union official at Liberty Steel in South Yorkshire says he's confident the firm will bounce back.

    Liberty Steel sign Stocksbridge

More than 1,400 people are employed by Liberty in Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Concerns over the company have grown after key financial backer Greensill Capital went bust.

It emerged earlier this week the steel producer is asking some customers to pay upfront as it struggles with cash flow.

Local union rep Lee Bradshaw said: "They've been hit hard. Nobody's flying aeroplanes, aeroplanes don't need to be serviced, nobody's buying steel to make parts for aeroplanes.

"But there's nobody at work from management down to the shop floor that doesn't think that business is going to come back."

GFG Alliance, which owns Liberty Steel, has confirmed its cashflow has been badly affected by the collapse of Greensill Capital.

Labour is calling for the government to step in and save the company.

  20. Red Arrows grounded after Hawk jet crashpublished at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

Lincolnshire's Red Arrows have been grounded after a Navy jet crashed in Cornwall.

    Crash scene

Following the crash the RAF and Royal Navy have paused flying of all Hawk T1 jets - including the Red Arrows based at RAF Scampton.

Two pilots ejected from the aircraft, which was from the 736 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Culdrose, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed. Defence Minister Johnny Mercer said engine failure was suspected.

The MoD said the pause in operations was a "precautionary measure while investigations were ongoing".

Police said they received reports of the two-seater training aircraft crashing in the St Martin area on the Lizard Peninsula on Thursday morning.

The pilots, who were airlifted to hospital, are in a stable condition "without significant injury", police said.

Ejection seat manufacturer Martin-Baker said it was the first ejection from a Royal Navy aircraft in 18 years.

An MoD spokesperson said: "Safety is our paramount concern. The RAF has decided to temporarily pause Hawk T1 operations as a precautionary measure, while investigations are ongoing."
