Prince Philip: Hull City Council pays tributepublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 9 April 2021
Hull City Council has recalled Prince Philip's many visits to the city as it paid tribute to him following his death earlier today at the age of 99.
In a statement issued on behalf of the council, it said it would like to express on behalf of the city its "great sorrow" at Prince Philip's death.
It continued: "The duke dedicated his life to public service and carried out his duties across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world with distinction.
"We were honoured to welcome him to the city most recently, along with Her Majesty the Queen, in March 2009 for the opening of the Hull Paragon Interchange."
The statement also recalled the duke's strong ties to Hull Trinity House where the duke (pictured above visiting Hull in 1977) often attended the annual Christmas luncheon.
The statement concluded: "We would like to express our deepest sympathies to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family."
