1. Good evening from BBC Yorkshirepublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

That's all from us this Sunday evening.

It's been quite a few days culminating in West Yorkshire's first elected metro mayor.

But the elections don't stop there.

On Monday, South Yorkshire's votes will be counted for the county's Police and Crime Commissioner.

There's also the counting of votes in Sheffield, which is now under no overall control by one party, in the city's referendum which could change how the city council is run.

    Good evening.

More from Tracy Brabin's victory speech at the Leeds First Direct Arena.

She said: "Growing up on free school meals, in a Birstall council flat, inspired by the Batley Variety Club to pursue life as an actor, I never imagined I would be elected as a Member of Parliament in my home town, let alone be asked to serve as the first ever metro mayor of West Yorkshire.

    Tracy Brabin and Matthew Robinson

"The first ever woman metro mayor in the country.

"Our politics are better when women are at the top table."

She added: "And I hope, in some small way, my election will say to working class kids across our region, it doesn't matter where you live, what your parents do for a living, how much money you have in the bank or where you went to school, you can reach the very top."

  4. West Yorkshire "grasped the opportunity" says new mayorpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

New West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin said it was a "historic day" as she made a speech following the declaration at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

    Tracy Brabin

She said: "It is an honour that I just can't put into words to be standing in front of you today as the first ever metro mayor of our wonderful, dynamic, creative and diverse West Yorkshire region."

She thanked her agent, husband, daughters and campaign team and "the people of West Yorkshire".

She said: "You came out and grasped the opportunity to, at long last, take decision making out of the hands of strangers in Whitehall and bring them closer to home to the people of West Yorkshire.

"Devolution is our opportunity to make West Yorkshire an even better place to live, work, study, raise a family, start a business and grow old."

She won't be able to be mayor and an MP.

It's because the role of mayor in this region includes being police commissioner and you can't be in Westminster and in charge of West Yorkshire Police.

The rule doesn't apply to South Yorkshire's mayor Dan Jarvis because he's not police commissioner.

It means Batley and Spen will very soon become the focus of a by-election.

In fact, every political party will be on doorsteps and every news organisation will be there sticking microphones under voters' noses.

After what happened in Hartlepool and with a Labour majority of just over 3,000 it will be an intense election fight.

It took a while, but Tracy Brabin was declared West Yorkshire's first elected mayor in the end.

Votes were placed on Thursday but not counted until Sunday.

And even then, after a first round in which she managed to record about 43% of first preference votes, a second count was needed to confirm victory over Conservative candidate Matthew Robinson.

Here are a selection of images as Ms Brabin, who turned 60 today, was confirmed mayor.

What a way to celebrate your birthday.

Tracy Brabin’s facemask at the count today was a map of West Yorkshire - she’s now in charge of quite a few things that will affect the lives of more than two million people living there.

Labour will no doubt be pleased that they’ve won - but they may be slightly disappointed not to get over the 50% line on the first preferences.

But in the end the Conservatives were 100k votes behind after the second preferences.

    The big job starts now.

The Labour MP, who celebrates her 60th birthday today, won on second preference votes after recording 261,170 or 43.09% of first preference votes in the first count.

Conservative Matthew Robinson came second. He gained 176,167 or 29.07% of first choice votes but could not catch the former Coronation Street actress.

Her success means she will have to resign her Westminster seat, triggering a by-election in Batley & Spen.

At the 2019 general election she had a majority of 3,525.

A similar story in second preference votes in Kirklees to Leeds and Wakefield.

It really seems like a matter of time now until Labour's Tracy Brabin is confirmed as West Yorkshire's first elected mayor.

And she'll be the first female elected mayor in England too.

After a brief scramble to the podium to hear the returning officer say "it was time" to count the second preferences votes, the library atmosphere has returned to Leeds Arena as we wait to find out who will be West Yorkshire's mayor.

Counters are leafing through piles of ballots.

Labour's Tracy Brabin is ahead, but hasn’t reached the magic 50% threshold for the contest to be over.

Depending on who you ask it could be another hour or two.

  14. Yorkshire Party on "strong message" for third-place finishpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

Although Labour and the Conservatives will now be fighting out first and second in the West Yorkshire mayoral elections, a smaller party made a big dent.

The Yorkshire Party polled almost 59,000 first choice votes - that's somewhere just under 10% of the total turnout.

They beat the Greens and Lib Dems into fourth and fifth respectively.

The party's Bob Buxton says their vote has sent a "strong message to Westminster".

  15. Mayoral vote goes to second preferencepublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

The vote for the first metro mayor of West Yorkshire will go to second preference votes as none of the candidates reached 50% of all votes cast.

    Tracy Brabin

The total votes cast were: 617,782

And the results on the first round are as follows:

    Ali (reform): 14,943

    Brabin (Lab): 261,170

    Buxton (Yorkshire): 58,851

    Cooper (Green): 55,833

    Golton (Lib Dem): 30,162

    Hirst (Eng Dems): 8,969

    Robinson (Con): 176,167

It means Ms Brabin and Mr Robinson go through to the second round.

  16. First results for mayoral electionpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

The Leeds area's votes for the West Yorkshire mayor post have been revealed.

These are one of five areas - the councils of West Yorkshire - that will make up the total vote.

They seem to suggest, that in Leeds at least, Tracy Brabin is leading but does not have the 50% of first preferences she needs to avoid going to second preference votes.

But, that is only in Leeds. The rest of the results could mean changes.

  17. The West Yorkshire mayoral election explainedpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

Voters across West Yorkshire went to the polls to elect the region's first ever mayor on Thursday.

BBC Yorkshire political editor James Vincent explains what it means for the region.

  18. How does the mayoral vote work?published at 15:39 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

Elections for metro mayors differ slightly from how we vote for MPs and members of our local council.

    Ballot boxesImage source, Getty Images

Mayors are elected using the Supplementary Vote system. We get a first and second choice when we vote.

If no candidate gets more than 50% of the first choice votes, all except the top two candidates are eliminated.

If your first choice candidate is eliminated, and your second choice is for one of the top two, then your second choice is counted.

  20. Analysis: West Yorkshire's first mayoral electionpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 9 May 2021

    James Vincent
    Political Editor BBC Look North

A big day, a big job, a big turnout?

We found out yesterday that 36% of people voted in this election. That means there are quite a lot of people who haven’t had their say about who becomes mayor.

But local election turnouts are always lower than those in a general election. This is the first time out for the idea of a mayor in West Yorkshire. When that happened in South Yorkshire in 2018 the turnout was 25%.

Greater Manchester and Liverpool had their second metro mayoral elections this week. Turnout in both places increased this time compared to 2017 but they’re both still lower than West Yorkshire’s 36%.

It’s interesting to see the variations in turnout across West Yorkshire - 40% of people voted in Calderdale while the number in Wakefield was 30%.

There is still work to do on increasing turnout in general, but West Yorkshire has shown there is an appetite for someone to shout up on their behalf.
