    About 90 Afghan refugees who arrived in Scarborough last week have been "overwhelmed by the generosity" of people, the chairman of Scarborough Islamic Society has said.

    Volunteers have been busy this weekend sorting through hundreds of donated items after collection points were inundated when Scarborough's Rainbow Centre put out an appeal for clothes, toiletries and shoes.

    The town's Islamic Society has offered support to the refugees, over 60 of whom are children, who are being temporarily housed in a local hotel.

    Chairman Dr Zaid Al-Saffar has told BBC Radio York: "To see their children happy and playing really is a nice sight, when you compare it to what you see is happening in their own country."

    Officials and senior councillors from across North Yorkshire are due to meet this week to co-ordinate their response to the Afghan crisis.

    There have already been commitments from both York and Harrogate councils to take in some refugees.

    A 27-year-old man who suffered serious head injuries in an assault in Sheffield earlier this month has died, police have confirmed.

    The man was attacked on Halifax Road in Parson Cross at about 21:00 on Sunday 8 August.

    He died last Wednesday and a post-mortem examination carried out on Friday proved inconclusive, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Further investigations will now be carried out into the cause of the man's death, the force added.

    Two men, aged 20 and 33, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remain on police bail.

    A 27-year-old woman who was also arrested in connection with the assault has been released with no further police action, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact police.

    Dramatic drone footage has been released of the moment Ferrybridge Power Station's two chimney stacks tumbled to the ground at the weekend.

    The 656ft-high towers and boiler house were destroyed in a controlled explosion on Sunday morning at the former coal-fired plant in West Yorkshire.

    A no-fly zone was in place during the blast, but drone operators worked with power firm SSE and demolition team Keltbray to capture the demolition on camera.

    Ferrybridge Power Station operated between 1966 and 2016 and generated enough electricity to power two million homes at peak capacity.

  4. Inquiry after five hurt in high-speed crash in Lincolnpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 23 August 2021

    Investigations are continuing in Lincoln after five people were left seriously injured when two cars hit spectators at a car meet at the weekend.

    Police say the cars were being driven at high speed in front of a large crowd when they crashed in Whisby Road at about 22:00 on Saturday.

    One of those injured is described as being in a critical condition.

    Det Supt Peter Grayson, of Lincolnshire Police, has urged anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage to contact them.

    He says: "This is a very serious collision with profound physical consequences for those injured.

    "The event had a large crowd, and we would like to speak to anyone who has not yet been spoken to as part of our investigations."

    A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife in Leeds.

    Eileen Barrott (pictured), 50, who worked as a nurse at St James's Hospital, was found seriously injured in Naburn Fold, Whinmoor, on 15 August and died at the scene.

    At Leeds Magistrates' Court, Mark Barrott, 54, only spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth during the three-minute hearing.

    He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday.

    Investigations are continuing after a man fell from the second floor window of a hotel in Bridlington, leaving him in a critical condition.

    Scarborough’s coronavirus rate remains below the national average for the third week running after a slight fall, latest figures show.

    The borough’s seven-day rate per 100,000 people is now 272, down from 281 last week - but up slightly from 271 two weeks ago.

    There were 296 new infections in the last seven days at an average of 42 each day.

    It means that Scarborough’s rate remains below the average for England which stands at 326 per 100,000 and the North Yorkshire average which is now 306.

    Ryedale has the highest rate in the county at 377, a jump from seven days ago when it was 296.

    Hambleton has the lowest rate currently in North Yorkshire at 230.

    The number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Scarborough and York has risen by two to 35, with the number of patients requiring intensive care up one to four.

    Mobile testing facilities are due to be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this week for anyone with symptoms to get tested.

    A four-year-old girl has been left seriously injured after falling from a moving car in Grimsby.

    It happened at about 16:45 on Sunday on the A180 while the child was travelling in a black Kia Sedona, according to Humberside Police.

    The force said the car was heading westbound between the Westgate and Pyewipe roundabouts when the girl fell and suffered "potentially life-threatening injuries".

    She remains in hospital receiving treatment, with police appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    People gathered at Hull Minster on Sunday to mark 100 years since an airship crashed in the River Humber, killing 44 people.

    Based at Howden, the R38 was undergoing final testing before delivery to the US Navy.

    But, on 24 August 1921 the airship burst into flames and crashed in the Humber estuary.

    Sunday's service commemorated the deaths of the British and American crew members who died in the disaster.

    John Martin, grandson of Alfred Martin, who died in the crash, said: "Several days before the crash he wrote to my grandmother to say he would be getting a lift on the ship.
