About 90 Afghan refugees who arrived in Scarborough last week have been "overwhelmed by the generosity" of people, the chairman of Scarborough Islamic Society has said.
Volunteers have been busy this weekend sorting through hundreds of donated items after collection points were inundated when Scarborough's Rainbow Centre put out an appeal for clothes, toiletries and shoes.
The town's Islamic Society has offered support to the refugees, over 60 of whom are children, who are being temporarily housed in a local hotel.
Chairman Dr Zaid Al-Saffar has told BBC Radio York: "To see their children happy and playing really is a nice sight, when you compare it to what you see is happening in their own country."
Officials and senior councillors from across North Yorkshire are due to meet this week to co-ordinate their response to the Afghan crisis.
There have already been commitments from both York and Harrogate councils to take in some refugees.
