The Prisons Minister has told a Leicestershire MP that Glen Parva jail will close in the next three months.

South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa has been told that all inmates will be moved out of the prison by the end of June. 

Plans for the prison's complete reconstruction - doubling its capacity - were revealed in January.

Cast your mind back to 9 March 2016 when this happened on Fosse Road South in Leicester...

Two people died in the crash - David Anger and Christopher Needham.

They were passengers in a car being driven by Guy Tomlinson, who has today been jailed for nine years.

The 37-year-old from Norfolk Walk in Leicester previously pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing death by driving while uninsured and two counts of causing death by driving while unlicensed.  

Tomlinson was being followed by an unmarked police car when the crash happened - this led to an investigation by the Independant Police Complaints Commission. The IPCC has yet to publish its findings.

An off-duty South Yorkshire firefighter's been hailed a hero after helping to save the life of a Leicester City supporter during the club's Champions League win over Sevilla.

Caz Whiteman was in the crowd for the match at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night when a fellow spectator collapsed with a suspected heart attack.

She rushed to help pitch-side first aiders give CPR for more than 15 minutes, until he was taken to hospital by ambulance. 

The man, who has three children, is now making a full recovery.

The two former BBC Radio Leicester presenters, Tony and Julie Wadsworth, denied five charges of outraging public decency over allegations they had sex against a tree in full view of a group of boys . 

The married couple from Broughton Astley also pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent assault at a court hearing in Warwick earlier today.

Mrs Wadsworth, who used the on-air name Julie Mayer, is alleged to have "touched" seven complainants, including on an occasion when her husband "kept watch" and had a camera in his possession.

Most of us have heard of Florence Nightingale - the nurse who transformed military hospitals into more hygienic, well run units during the Crimean War.

But have you ever heard of Ann Hely? Probably not.

As a widow in her 30s she also set sail for Crimea to nurse injured soldiers.

A short film about the heroine is being recorded in Ravenstone this week - she lived in the village in the 19th century.

You'll be available to see the film at the Ashby Arts Festival on 27 May at the Venture Theatre.

Archaeologists are finishing their excavation of land near the John Lewis car park in Leicester.

They will hand the site back to builders tomorrow. 

Experts from the University of Leicester have uncovered all sorts of artefacts, including the largest piece of mosaic that's been found in Leicester in the last 30 years.

More recently, they found this intact jug - thought to be 700 years old...

Leicester South MP Jon Ashworth has called for safety improvements on a junction following an accident involving a cyclist this morning.

The cyclist was believed to have suffered "minor injuries" after being involved a crash with a car at about 09:00 on the corner of London Road and Clarendon Park Road, Leicestershire Police said. 

This photo was tweeted to Mr Ashworth by Phil Shelton, who said there are "too many accidents here".

Mr Ashworth responded by asking deputy mayor Rory Palmer if they can start a discussion about improving safety in that spot.

Shakespeare has defended his striker Jamie Vardy, who was involved in a "clash of heads" with Sevilla midfielder Samir Nasri who then accused Vardy of "cheating".

The Foxes boss said: “Jamie's not a cheat. Never has been and never will be. Jamie responded well to the comment and we have to put it to bed.

“The referee made a decision and we have to move on.”

Two former BBC Radio Leicester presenters have pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court this morning to a string of sex offences against boys .

Tony Wadsworth, aged 69, and his 59-year-old wife Julie both live on Old Mill Road in Broughton Astley.

The court heard the 17 offences  are alleged to have taken place between July 1992 and August 1999. 

The couple both pleaded not guilty to five counts of outraging public decency.

Mr Wadsworth also pleaded not guilty to ten counts of indecent assault against young boys.

Mrs Wadsworth also pleaded not guilty to twelve counts of indecent assault against young boys. 

The pair face a trial due to start on 15 May.

Craig Shakespeare has arrived at Leicester City's pre-West Ham press conference.

He starts with questions about the competition everyone is talking about - the Champions League.

He said: "I haven't banned talk of the Champions League but the players are focusing on West Ham and that's all the talk that's been today.”

Shakespeare said they will be training when the draw happens tomorrow.

He doesn't seem to have a preference over who they get: "We can't affect it. They all have their own strengths but we have our strengths as well."

A school in the Beaumont Leys area of Leicester has held a meeting with parents after two pupils tested positive for tuberculosis at the end of last year.

Barley Croft Primary posted on their Facebook page last night to say that children who were identified as contagious in December were treated before coming back to school.

They've had to wait three months to test any other children but claim those that had any chance of catching it are being screened.

They said to parents "please don't worry" and "it's a rare disease, that's hard to catch and easily treatable".

They're working with Public Health England, external - Dr Philip Monk from PHE said: "TB is a serious disease, but the risk of catching the infection is very low. 

“It requires prolonged and close contact with somebody who has TB and it can be easily cured with a course of antibiotics."

Leicester and England great Peter Shilton believes the giants of European football will all want to avoid the Foxes in the Champions League quarter-finals. 

Craig Shakespeare's side will discover their next opponents in Friday's draw after they beat Sevilla 3-2 on aggregate following a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

The highlight of my morning was having the chance to use an air gun to change a tyre on Team Parker’s car in the British Touring Car Championship...

There’s around 10 BTCC races across the country between now and October - the race at Donington Park is over Easter weekend (15/16 April).

Stephen Jelley from Leicester is hoping for great things after being away from BTCC for several years. He’s confident in his Team Parker which is based in Desford and has about 20 cars in its garages there.

It’s the first time I’ve seen inside the big transporter lorries which take the cars around the country.

They are essentially mobile garages that look like galley kitchens with all the equipment stored below the two side counters....

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has been speaking to the media two days before his side's clash against Champions League quarter-finalists Leicester.

He said: "Leicester are a different team to a few weeks ago. Their result against Sevilla was a great result for English football.

"They play simply but it's productive. They are again, now, playing like they did last season. It's electric."
